“This year’s football team is
just great,’ Mrs. Boots Watson,
wife of linebacker coach Dan
Watson, says.
“I’m proud of all the boys,
especially the ones Don recruit
ed,” she added.
To her, recruiting is one of
the most important parts of foot
ball. “You have to have good
boys to work with,” she noted.
“Don has always known that
he wanted to be a coach,” she
said. “He wa§ raised by his high
school football coach.”
Coach Watson recruited Billy
Kubecka, Ivan Jones, Buster
Adami, Tommy Maxwell, Larry
Stegent, Mike Caswell and Char
lie Riggs.
“We kind of grow up with the
players,” she said. “I’m so proud
of Don because he has recruited
such good players for us.’
She enjoys recruiting because
it gives her a chance to meet the
players and their families.
“When Don was recruiting
Tommy Maxwell, he went to visit
Tommy’s mother in Houston,”
Mrs. Watson recalled. “Mrs.
Maxwell was having a bridge
party,” she added. “So Don spent
the afternoon playing bridge, and
we got Tommy,’ she continued.
“Billy Kubecka comes from a
family of 11,” she said. “They
are all so proud of him and so
are we.”
Mrs. Watson enjoys traveling.
She sometimes goes with Coach
Watson when he recruits.
“I remember when Don was
recruiting Buster Adami,” she
said. “After Don made a speech
at a banquet, Buster came up and
said, “ ‘Coach, I want to play for
you,’ ” she continued.
Mrs. Watson is very interested
in the players. “I kind of take
them under my wing,” she said.
“And I’m so proud because they
have done so well this year.”
She has enjoyed being a coach’s

wife because it has given her an
opportunity to travel.
Mrs. Watson, who is an artist,
calls herself a “realistic rather
than a modern painter.” “I en
joy painting old things, like gene
ral stores,” she said.
She has always been interested
in art. She attended Southwest
Texas State where she majored
in art. She also attends art
schools during the summer.
She is also an interior decora
tor. “I enjoy changing things,”
she said. “I redid our house when
we moved in.”
She is very interested in Span
ish art and has used it in decora
ting her home.
She was very happy to come
back to A&M. “The spirit of
A&M is really great,” she said.
“We’ve been to five universities
and none of them have as much
spirit as A&M, she aded.
The Watsons have two child
ren, Kelly age 9 and Bobby, who
is 6. What is their favorite sport ?
