BAIT PICK
THE BATTALION
Thursday, November 9, 1967 College Station, Texas
Page 9
^ V At the start of the 1967 college football season, several
^ periodicals specializing in college gridiron antics picked a
pre-season top ten teams.
Recently, we took an average of all the picks, and came
up with a consensus pre-season top ten. It goes like this:
l_Notre Dame ; 2—Alabama; 3—Texas; 4—Michigan St.;
>—USC ; 6—Miami (Fla.) ; 7—Georgia; 8—Tennessee; 9—
UCLA; 10—Colorado.
With the season some eight weeks old, the list just
Lentioned doesn’t quite agree with the present twenty-best.
Notre Dame of course, has come back down with the
pumans and have lost two games thus far this season. Their
jhanges at repeating at the top ten spot are slim but they
seem to have some mystic hold on the poll-takers and still
nay end up on top.
Alabama has also fallen (for them) on some hard
times. Bear Bryant’s charges have come up short twice
this season. They face a third time this week when they
meet the hot LSU Tigers.
Everyone in the Southwest knows that Texas is not
^ated the number three team at this point in the season.
Michigan State, picked to finish fourth, have fallen far
-ak,®hort of that lofty position. Their performance this year
Win :an k 0 compared to the 1965 Spartan season, but only in
Reverse. State’s ’65 slate was supposed to finish in a 5-5
ieadlock. They proved everyone wrong and went unbeaten
and played in the Rose Bowl.
This year, Michigan State has come out a winner two
out of seven times. Not quite a big league percentage!
USC has done better than expected and currently sits
atop the top ten team listings. They may slip, however, as
lst fa: ’ they play Oregon State and UCLA in the next two weeks.
Miami started out very slowly, losing their first two
games to Northwestern and Penn State. But, the Hurri-

Play Here Tonight
The Aggie Fish, winless in
three outings, play host to the
Texas Tech Picadors tonight in
Kyle Field.
The 7:30 kickoff. will pit the
two teams against each other
for the first time on one of the
team’s home fields. Previously
the game has been played on a
neutral site in west Texas.
The Picadors are the defending
Southwest Conference champions
but are winless in two tries thus
far in the season. The Tech
Freshmen must take the game to
at least have a chance to break
even for the season. The Picadors
only play four games during the
season.
The Aggies have only one more
game after tonight’s. They play
the Texas Shorthorns Nov. 22 in
San Antonio.

are ready to enter the top rankings.
Georgia’s Cotton Bowl champions started out strongly
but have gone 2-2 in their last four games to knock them
out of the ten-best.
Tennessee, like USC have lived up to expectations and
are currently number two in the rankings. An oddity how
ever, that the Vols’ one loss came at the hands of UCLA
who are two slots behind Tennessee.
UCLA, which we have mentioned several times, is the
third team doing better than expected. The Uclans would
be runner-up but their 16-16 tie with Oregon State put them
where they are now.
Finally, Colorado has fallen apart coming down the
stretch.
Once again, “hey look you’re wrong” triumphs over
good old-fashioned silent sympathy.

Texas A&M’s soccer team de
feated Allen Military Academy of
Bryan, 7-1, on the Allen field
Saturday.
Angel Pastor, the Aggie cen
ter forward, scored first on a
close shot into the Allen goal.
The second score came on Abdel
Ghanemi’s kick from his left
wing position. Abdelhamid Zid,
A&M’s right inside forward
kicked the third goal, and Josef
Dine, finished the first half scor
ing with a goal from his center
fullback position.
Allen scored their only goal
when Carlos Garza, their center
forward, broke through the Aggie
defense. At the half it was 4-1 in
favor of the Maroon and White.
At the start of the second half
Pastor scored again. The offense
continued to score as Zid kicked
the sixth goal. The final score
came on Pastor’s bullet-like shot
into the Allen net.
This victory raised A&M’s over
all record to 5-2. In Southwest
Conference play they stand 5-1,
in first place, one game in front
eumoc of St. Marys of San Antonio.

The University of Texas post
poned next week’s game with the
Aggies till December 16. In two
weeks the Southwest Invitational
Soccer Tournament is to begin in
Austin. However, team captain
Carlos Guerra expressed appre
hension about the Aggies being
able to participate due to insuf
ficient funds.
The only financial support the
soccer team has is from the pro
fits of the Exchange Store. The
invitational tournament lasts the
entire weekend and with only
$130.00 to cover team expenses
they will probably have to cancel
their appearance.
