33 foot darkrooms used by 96
Texas A&M students.
Such is actually the case.
C. M. Sykes, a retired food
buyer who likes to keep his finger
near a camera shutter release,
is the Memorial Student Center
club’s advisor.
The 69-year-old College Station
resident chides club shutterbugs
about their “house-keeping” in
the darkrooms as Klub Kop, is
handy with saw, hammer and
nails and inspires confidence of
club members.
“Sykes is one of the most pre
cious people I know,” remarked
J. Wayne Stark, MSC director.
“He’s very generous with his
time and helped build one , of the
finest camera clubs in the U. S.,
working as an unpaid advisor.”
“Student leadership in the cam
era committee is strong because
he attracts that sort of student,
and keeps him,” Sthirk went on.
The elfish-appearing, sprightly
Sykes could pass for 20 years
younger. Almost any weekday
morning he is found in the student
programs office or the darkrooms,
finalizing details for a meeting,
photo contest or the club’s annual
intercollegiate photo salon.
At other times, he’s cleaning
darkroom shelves and lockers, re
turning misplaced gear to its
proper place or looking after en
largers, drum dryer, print wash
er, negative cabinet or sundry
other equipment used in turning
blank film into prize-winning
photographs.
“Unless I’m on a fishing trip,”
he injects.

Please don't
zlupf Sprite.
It makes
plenty of noise
all by itself.
Sprite, you recall, is
the soft drink that's
so tart and tingling,
we just couldn't keep
it quiet.
Flip its lid and it
really flips.
Bubbling, fizzing,
gurgling, hissing and
carrying on all over
the place.
An almost exces
sively lively drink.
Hence, to zlupf is
to err.
What is zlupfing?
Zlupfing is to drinking what
smacking one's lips is to
eating.
It's the staccato buzz you
make when draining the last few
deliciously tangy drops of
Sprite from the bottle with a
straw.
Zzzzzlllupf!
It's completely uncalled for.
Frowned upon in polite society.
And not appreciated on campus
either.
But. If zlupfing Sprite
is absolutely essential to your
enjoyment; if a good healthy
zlupf is your idea of heaven,
well...all right.
But have a heart. With a
drink as noisy as Sprite, a
little zlupf goes a long, long
way.
