BAIT PICKS
By JERRY GRISHAM
The Rice Owls try to hang on
to their first place spot in the
Southwest Conference this Satur
day in Austin at the expense of
the resurging Texas Longhorns.
The Owls go into the contest
with an acute injury problem.
L. V. Benningfield, Rice’s leading
ground gainer, is out for the re
mainder of the season with an
ankle injury.
THE INDEFINITE loss of top
defensive end George Alexander
with a hurt knee combined with
the earlier loss of quarterback
Robby Shelton and guard Frank
Mandola put the Owls in a diffi
cult position.
The Longhorns come off of a
21-12 victory over the Arkansas
Razorbacks and with the confer
ence’s leading ground gainer
in Chris Gilbert threaten to cut
short the Owl’s first place reign.
After five games Gilbert now
has 620 yards. His 162 yards
against Arkansas moved him into
the Texas career rushing lead
with 1,700 yards in only a sea
son and a half.
Texas Aggie fans are in a
strange spot as far as Aggies
are concerned. A Texas victory
combined with an Aggie win over
the Baylor Bears will leave the
Farmers alone on top with a 3-1
’39 Ag Gridders
To Hold Reunion
Members of the Texas Aggies’
1939 National Championship foot
ball team will hold their 28th re
union here Friday and Saturday
in connection with the Aggie-
Baylor football game.
Howard Shelton, president of
the group, has announced that
headquarters will be at the Sands
Motel in College Station. A bar
becue Friday night at the Sands
will start the weekend for the
group.
Following the Saturday after
noon football game, the ’39 group
will have a buffet banquet at
Briarcrest Country Club. The bus
iness meeting Sunday morning
will complete the 1967 reunion.
Tribute will be paid to the mem
bers of that team have died. In
addition to Coach Homer Norton
and assistant Harry Faulkner
they include Gus Bates, Jitterbug
Henderson, Jack Kimbrough, Der
ace Moser, Joe Parish, Herbie
Smith and Maurice Williams.
Currently, the group supports
two boys at Texas A&M on aca
demic scholarships and plans to
start another each year, Shelton
announced.
Who’s On First?
In Rice Backfield
HOUSTON (AP) — Tailback
Terry Shelton missed practice
Wednesday with either a virus
or strep throat and there was
some doubt that he would be able
to play when Rice meets Texas
Saturday night in Austin.
“There’s a chance he’ll play—
and even start—if he gets out
tomorrow,” said a worried Bo
Hagan, Rice head coach. “If he
can’t work out, though, his chan
ces are slim.”
Shelton took over the No. 1
tailback position last week when
L. V. Benningfield was injured in
the Southern Methodist game.
Shelton scored both touchdowns
in Rice’s 14-10 defeat of SMU.
The Owls who have won three
in a row, are beginning to wonder
what their backfield will be like
from week to week. Number one
quarterback Robby Shelton dis
located his shoulder in Rice’s op
ener with LSU and is out indef
initely.
Benningfield is out for the sea
son after undergoing surgery on
his ankle last Sunday.
In fact, fullback Lester Lehman
is the only original backfield
starter still healthy. Hagan, in his
first year as head man, took the
job knowing the depth of per
sonnel has always been a problem
at Rice. S o far, the injuries
haven’t seemed to bother the
Owls as the three game skein is
the longest at the Houston school
in quite awhile.
record so Aggies will be hoping
for a Longhorn win at the same
time they will be pulling for the
A&M squad to bomb the Bears.
IN RECENT YEARS the Ag
gies and Bears have met with
the Ags relying primarily on a
ground attack while Baylor has
been a passing team. This year
the roles are reversed with the
Aggies being the aerial wizards
and Bears holding forth with the
infantry.
The Aggies, however, proved
last week against TCU that they
aren’t lacking in the ground-gain
ing department. They may have
the chance Saturday afternoon to
find out if it was poor TCU de
fense or if the A&M running
game has truly come into its
own.
Texas Tech and Southern Met
hodist, both tied with 1-1 confer
ence marks for third place along
with Texas, try to break their
part of the deadlock when they
collide in Lubbock.
AFTER TWO GREAT starts
including a victory over Texas,
the Raiders have been winless in
three outings and the Mustangs
haven’t been on the winning side
since their win over A&M in Sep
tember.
The Raiders have the running
of John Scovell and Mike Leinert
and SMU has Jerry Levias. Mike
Livingston, out since the A&M
game, may be back in at quarter-

Texas Christian will try to
