She is an administrative spe
cialist in the basic section, where
Major Crum worked the last two
years.
The Jacksboro native will have
two weeks leave with his wife,

Rifle Team Wins
Shooting Match
The Texas A&M rifle team
won its second match of the sea
son, defeating Texas Tech Sat
urday in a Southwest Rifle As
sociation match.
A&M defeated the Red Raider
riflemen 1,261 to 1,162. Christo
pher West of San Antonio fired
279 out of a possible 300 to lead
Aggie shooters at Lubbock.
Snakes usually give women the
shakes, but Kay Taylor, a lab
oratory technician in Texas A&M
University’s Wildlife Science De
partment, loves them.
“I was real lucky to get this
job,” she smiled. “I don’t think
I could have stood being a secre
tary. The girls in the personnel
office couldn’t believe I wanted
this type job.”
The wife of Dana Taylor, a
senior industrial engineering
major from Valparaiso, Fla., Mrs.
Taylor has, among other tasks,
the chore of feeding the depart
ment’s non-poisonous snakes.
“Some of them have been hid
ing’ under newspapers used to line
their cages,” Mrs. Taylor pointed
out. “A lot of snakes put up a
big bluff about biting. You have
to be around them a lot to get
over the fear of being bitten.
Besides, a lot of their bites would
be less painful than a puppy’s.”
Mrs. Taylor recalls the first
snake she ever handled.
“I was about nine years old
when my younger brother,
Dwight, talked me into handling
an indigo snake,” she laughed.
“Naturally, he bit me.”
“As a youngster,” Mrs. Taylor
reminisced, “we lived at Home
stead, Fla., just above the Ever
glades. Dwight raised indigos as
a hobby and sold them to the
Miami Serpentarium. We became
attached to some of them and re
fused to sell.”
The blue-eyed Mis. Taylor says
the hardest part of her job is
getting snakes to eat in captivity.
“One of our coachwhip’s died
this week,” she said. “It just
wouldn’t eat. We have a bull
snake that will eat anything you
feed him. The snakes in this col
lection are not messy eaters.
They never leave a trace of the
animals they have eaten.”
Mrs. Taylor claims she had
much rather handle a dangerous
copperhead than a harmless Tex
as Glossy.
“The glossys fidget around too
much,” she explained. “And they
seemingly are always trying to
bite.”
“I’m extremely respectful of
water moccasins,” Mrs. Taylor
commented. “We don’t have any
in the collection right now, but
I plan to bring one in soon.”
A senior elementary education
major at Louisiana State Univer
sity before she married, Mrs.
Taylor hopes to complete degree
requirements within two years.
In the meantime, she plans to
take an elective course next
spring at Aggieland—herpetolo
