SPRITE IS A RE '.ISTf REO TRADE MARK COCA COIA COMPANY Page 4 College Station, Texas Friday, September 29, 1967 THE BATTALION It’s Not The Same Now By GARY SHERER Last year Coach Gene Stallings’ Texas Aggie football team readied for their trip to Baton Rouge with an 0-2 record and some bruised football players. This season, on the surface, it looks about the same. The Aggies have lost their first two games and are suffering from some bruises after their battle with Purdue last week. Also, the team the Aggies will be playing, the LSU Tigers, are about the same as last year—-a cccbruising ball club! This year LSU Coach Charley McClendon hopes he has quarter back Nelson Stokley healthy enough for a complete season. Stokley is the key to the Bayou Bengals’ attack and last week he proved this fact to the Rice Owls. Along with Stokley, LSU boasts a tough, heavy defense. In end John Garlington and linebacker George Sevan, the Tigers have two efficient defensive perform ers. Coach Stallings also brought out at his press conference this week that LSU has their usual tough ball club. However, things aren’t the same as last year. This is the same team as last season but with a year’s experience under their belts. Last year’s club only had 16 points scored at this point in the season, this year’s edition has 37. Once more, the defense has given up less than 15 last year. Things definitely are different and Saturday night’s match with the Tigers and next week’s meet ing with the Florida State Semi- noles will go towards showing how different. With the present abundance of injuries, both offensive and de fensive lineups have plenty of either/or situation^ facing them just prior to Saturday night’s kickoff. The only players that probably won’t play are senior defensive end Grady Allen and sophomore lineman Bill Kubecka. Both have shoulder problems. Last week, Aggie quarterback Edd Hargett went to the air 34 times, while the week before run ning had been the offense. Stall ings hopes that LSU won’t know what to expect from his Aggie offense Saturday night. The running attack may be hampered somewhat with Wendell Housley and Larry Stegent ham pered with injuries. Both will be ready to play, however, by game time. Sophomore Ross Brup- bacher should see more action and fullback Bill Sallee is also ready to go. The receiving corps is in good shape with Bob Long, Tom my Maxwell and Tom Buckman all sound and ready. Last year, the Aggies battled the Tigers to a 7-7 tie. The second half of that game, the Aggies pushed LSU all over the field but couldn’t get the winning score. What was significant about that game was that the Aggies got their offense in gear. After that game, the Maroon and White rolled up three straight Southwest Conference victories to take the early conference lead. Another tough game for the Aggies, but that road back is starting to take shape. So hold on to your bumper stickers and watch out, LSU! ^ 9 J* HANDOFF! The Aggie offense goes through a running play as they prepare for Saturday night’s crucial battle with LSU. AGGIES ... DON’T DELAY! Soccer Team Plays LSU Texas A&M’s soccer team tests its offensive strength Saturday in a 2 p.m. match with Louisiana State at Baton Rouge. The team, 10-1 victor over Allen Academy last week, will attempt to promote defensive ef forts to go with the scoring punch provided by Abdelhamid Zid of Zaghouan, Tunisia, and Ramiro Rubio of Lima, Peru.
