Viet Cong Bullet
W ounds Houstonian
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Lance Cpl. John L. Burton, a
Texan at war, was walking the
point out in front of his company
when Viet Cong struck from
three sides.
The first time he was lucky.
They missed.
Burton, a 21-year-old Marine
from Houston, ducked for cover
and, with help from other men
in the company, chased the enemy
off.
A few minutes later Burton
was leading his company across
some rice paddies in a valley in
the Chu Lai area, and the Viet
Cong- struck again. A ricocheting
bullet tore into his right hip. It
was a jagged bullet and left a
bad wound.
It knocked him down and he
lay there a few minutes before
some hospital corpsmen could pull
him back to safety and patch him
up.
Burton had been scared before,
but for some reason he was not
this time.
“I don’t know why,” he said.
“I just wasn’t. I don’t know how
I really felt.”
He joined the Marine Corpsii
May 1966, and was in Vietmi
five months before being woundd
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs
Joe H. Burton, of Houston.
