Behind The Scenes
Texas A&M’s Mark Weaver could be making footl
history this season as the first “two-number" player in the
annals of the game. He has been assigned 79 and 82. He’ll
wear 79 at either offensive guard or tackle and will wear
82 when playing offensive end. He’s a top utility man
the offensive line and may see service at guard, tackle and
end. The rules (put in to stymie the tackle-eligible play
necessitate two numbers. He’ll change jerseys on the side
line when necessary. . . .
Best all-around athlete on the Aggie football squad is
wingback Bob Long of Paris. He was second-team
SWC as an outfielder in baseball last spring, is a southpaw
golfer who shoots in the 70s and after his 5:06 mile run he
has track Coach Charlie Thomas eying him enviously.
Strong end Tom Buckman, 6-4 and 214, was an all-state
basketball player in high school at Fort Worth Carter-
Riverside. . . .
Jerry Campbell, junior letterman linebacker-rover from
Center, Tex., is president of the Texas A&M student body
this year. . . . There are a lot of other leaders on the squad
Grady Allen, Harvey Aschenbeck, Campbell, Lynn Fister,
Carl Gough, Curley Hallman, Jack Kovar, Waymond Light-
foot and Charlie Riggs all were captains of their high
school teams. . . . Tom Chaffe, Danny Eckermann, Roy
Gunnels, Jim Piper and John Turney were presidents
either their high school student bodies or senior classes
Buster Adami and Roy Gunnels were valedictorians of their
graduating classes. . . .
Old school ties are at least two-fold in the A&M-SMl
encounter. SMU tackle John Kimbrough is the son of Aggie
great “Jarrin’ John Kimbrough," all-America fullback
the 1939 national champions at A&M. . . . Aggie sophomore
back Barney Harris of San Antonio is the son of Ben Har
ris who was captain and all-SWC in basketball at SMU in
1947. . . . Back in the 1918-20 era, Texas A&M won
straight in which the foes didn’t score a point . . . the last
game of 1918, 10 games in 1919 and the first 7 in 1920.
Junior QB Edd Hargett set a school record as a sopho
more last year when he threw 265 passes. He also set
school record with 132 completions and another school
mark with 1,532 yards passing and still another with Id
TD tosses. . . . The strong side of A&M’s offensive line will
average 227 with guard Maurice Moorman at 241, tackle
Rolf Krueger at 227 and end Tom Buckman at 214. Moor
man is 6-5 while Krueger and Buckman are both 6-4. .
Athletic Director Barlow (Bones) Irvin was a three
year letterman (1923-24-25) and was an all-SWC tackle in
1925. . . . Associate athletic director Marvin Tate also
lettered three years at guard (1952-53-54) . . . and head
coach Gene Stallings was a three-year letterman end (1954-
55-56) and was all-SWC in 1955.
