Practice
Begins
With their sights set on the
earliest Southwest Conference
football game in history, the
Aggies open fall football practice
today.
The ambitious Aggies, out to
improve on last year’s 4-5-1 mark,
take on the defending SWC cham
pions from SMU in a nationally
televised (ABC) game in Kyle
Field Sept. 16 at 3:20 p.m.
Coach Gene Stallings ap
proaches his third season as head
coach of the Aggies with 21 letter-
men on hand.
Three non-conference games
follow the season's opener with
the Mustangs. The Aggies play
Purdue in Dallas, Florida State
in College Station, and LSU in
Baton Rouge.
Team hopefuls ran a qualify
ing mile yesterday on the Kyle
Field track. A time of six minutes
and 18 seconds or less was re
quired before football equipment
could be checked out.
Two-a-day drills began today
with the morning session at nine
and the afternoon practice at six.
Workouts are closed to the public.
Matson Wins
Shot In Europe
Randy Matson, Texas A&M’s
world record-holder in the shot
put won his event once again in
an international track and field
meet, this time at Vaesteraas,
Sweden.
Matson's winning toss meas
ured 64-10, far below his world
record of 71-5%. Matson has not
been throwing the 16-pound ball
as far as he is capable, probably
due to his schedule which in
cludes nearly one meet each week.
This leaves the giant from Pampa
with little or no time for working
with the weights, a necessity for
his 70-foot tosses.
Matson will return to A&M in
September to complete require
ments for his bachelor’s degree
and will begin working on his
master’s degree in management
in the spring. He has been
awarded a $1,000 postgraduate
scholarship by the National Col
legiate Athletic Association, one
of 22 student-athletes so re
warded.
Former Athletes
Named To Enter
Ag Hall Of Fame
Three former athletes and
coach who brought athletic hon
ors to Texas A&M have been
elected to the University's Hall
of Fame.
Bill James of Hunt, line coach
of the Aggie football team from
1935 to 1947, will be inducted into
the Hall of Fame just before the
opening kick-off of the A&M-
Baylor football game Oct. 28 in
Kyle Field.
Inducted With him will be
Caesar (Dutch) Hohn of Bren-
ham, football and baseball star
from 1909 to 1913; W. A. (Wal
ly) Moon of Siloam Springs, Ark.,
a basketball and baseball stand
out who played in the major
leagues in baseball; and the late
J. V. (Siki) Sikes of Commerce,
a three-sport star in 1925-1928.
It will be the fourth annual
ceremony and they will join 14
other Aggie greats who have been
inducted in the last three years.

Yemen’s skyscrapers and walled
cities at a time when wigwams
still dotted Manhattan.
