Head adminis tered the oath to an Air Force officer Wednesday, a privilege he won’t likely have again soon, al though he’s the Air Force detach ment head in A&M’s Military Sci ence Department. The professor of aerospace studies conducted the ceremony that legally made Capt. Mary Panka a regular Air Force offi cer. The captain, from Atlanta, Ga., has been an Air Force Reserve officer since 1960. She is at A&M on regular Air Force duty assignment, studying for a masters degree in com puter science through the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). The brunett’s present job is her third assignment since returning to active duty in April, 1962. Cap tain Panka was data control sec tion chief of the Montgomery Air Defense Sector, Gunter AFB, Ala., and deputy chief in the per sonnel office, McGuire AFB, N.J., before arrival at A&M. “This is a challenging assign ment,” the captain said. “Most of our AFIT group has been out BACIi- TO - SCHOOL ringers of college a while. Our predeces sors did a good job at their studies and left some good rec ords to shoot for.” The 1959 Georgia State College graduate isn’t the first WAF AFIT student to enroll at A&M. First was Lt. Her bachelor degree is in business administration. A military veteran, she has 18 years service to her credit, in cluding four in the Army. She was discharged as a staff ser geant and finance clerk in 1952, then entered the AF reserve in ’53. She served two years in Germany and had one of her most unusual military experiences there. Finance section personnel were called out at 2 a.m. for a change over in scrip, the occupying forces’ monetary medium. “As it was checked in and ex changed for new scrip, the old bills were just tossed aside. The pile reached the ceiling and after wards, was burned,” she des cribed. Assignment at predominantly male A&M doesn’t pose any prob lems for the captain. COUPON • .
