For Meeting
Texas A&M now has an un
official “Aggie fan club” well
established in Venice, Italy, con
sisting of at least one devoted
member.
Fausto Bastianini, a citizen of
Venice, wrote the following let
ter to Texas A&M at the close of
the last spring semester:
This letter is to all Italy
friends;
My dear friends, my name is
Fausto Bastianini, 24 years old,
I live in Venice, a wonderful city
on the sea. I work in a news
paper as a teleprinter operator.
My family and affections are far
away and I am quite alone and
sad sometime. And now I tell
you why I am writing this letter
and excuse me for bad language,
but I am studying English by
myself.
I have read about your won
derful athlete, Matson. He is
fabulous, formidable! And my
dream is this: I should like so
much to have a shirt (cotton) of
your university. Please, please
content me. My size is medium.
Please tell me if you want money
for the shirt and postage or if
you prefer something equivalent
from Italy in exchange for you
AN ITALIAN AGGIE, FAUSTO BASTIANINI
New TTI Concept
Is Total Visibility
Keown Gives
Math Paper
At Oxford U.
Total visibility is the key to
a new technique developed by
Texas A&M’s Texas Transporta
tion Institute for illumination of
complex freeway interchanges.
First permanent installation of
the new lighting system is sched
uled for San Antonio, with the
Texas Highway Department tak
ing installation bids this week.
The new system, which incor
porates as many as ten 1,000-watt
high as 120 feet, provides more
uniform illumination over a wider
area than conventional lighting
and without as much glare, ex
plains Charles J. Keese, TTI
director.
Conventional lighting consists
of 400-watt lamps mounted on
40-foot poles. TTI researchers
estimate each of the new towers
will replace 11 of the standard
lighting devices.
Aside from improving visibil
ity at critical intersections, the
new system provides an addition
al safety factor by reducing the
number of hazardous poles along
the right-of-way.
The new sytem also has eco
nomical applications for lighting
straight sections of urban free
ways. THD estimates a $115,000
savings by using 50-foot poles
with 1,000-watt lamps on a 4.5
mile section of Interstate 35 in
Austin. The section would have
required about twice as many of
the conventional devices, notes
E. M. Carl of the THD design
division.
Texas A&M’s highway research
organization began development
of the new illumination technique
more than three years ago.
TTI is operating the illumin
ation research program under a
five-year $260,000 contract with
the THD and teh U. S. Depart
ment of Transportation’s Bureau
of Public Roads.
Dr. E. R. Keown, Texas A&M
mathematics professor, will pre
sent a joint paper during an
international conference Aug. 29-
Sept 2 at Oxford University, Ox
ford, England.
Dr. Keown’s paper, prepared
jointly with P. G. Ruud, is en
titled “The Computation of Irre
ducible Representations of Finite
Groups of Order 2 N , N 6.”
The paper is an extension of
research begun in 1963-64 while
Keown was a member of MIT’s
Solid State and Molecular Theory
Group.
Oxford’s international confer
ence on abstract algebra is de
signed to enable leading world
scientists to consider new research
discoveries.
Dr. Keown earned his Ph.D. at
MIT in 1950. He is author of
“Some New Hilbert Algebras,”
published in this month’s trans
actions of the American Mathe
matics Society. Keown also has
written a mathematics textbook,
“Introduction to Group Repre
sentations.”

kindness.
I pray you, dear friends for
this. I wish so much for a shirt.
It is not important if it is old or
dirty.
Good work and my best wishes
for your happy holidays.
Fausto Bastianini
Upon receiving this letter, sev
eral members of The Battalion
staff began gathering various
articles to send to the Italian
Aggie fan.
Enclosed in a package sent to
him was an A&M “T” shirt,
sweatshirt, decal, pennant and
several brochures.
Also in the package was a copy
of The Battalion and an auto
graphed picture of A&M’s Randy
Matson, World Shot Put Cham
pion.
The package took more than
two months to make the trip half
way around the world, but a
letter sent by Bastianini upon re
ceiving it took several days.
The letter read:
Dear friends;
Too much! Too much! Too
much!!! I just now have opened
your packet and jumped around
my room full of happiness. How
many wonderful things! I do not
know how I can thank you for
such great kindness and gen
erosity. Your packet is a well
without bottom, full of wonder
ful items. The shirts are very
nice and right for me. That
white one I shall put on tomor
row and when I go across St.
Marcus Circus I hope to find a
photographer for a photo that
I’ll send to you.
Then your newspaper, the de
cal, the pamphlets of your won
derful A&M University (I’ll read
them with quietness, now I’m all
shaken . . .) and the photo of
fabulous Matson—I’ll put and the
little pennant on the wall of my
room with my most loved things.
I thank you, I thank you so
much with all my heart.
Do you know two persons read
ing my “Sound Off” in The Bat
talion wrote to me ? One was a
girl who wrote a long and nice
letter by Italian language but
she did not tell me her name.
The other is now a dear friend,
Bobby, who, with his wife, comes
this autumn near my city; so we
can meet and go together around
Venezia and speak about the
wonderful heart of Texas—
Many many thanks again and
my best regards for all students
of A&M Universtiy.
