A quintet of Texas Aggies
mixed business with pleasure to
secure contributions for A&M’s
13th Student Conference on Na
tional Affairs.
Three of the youths went to
Mexico City while two others
stopped off in Monterrey. In 10
days, the fund raisers subscribed
$700 in donations toward
SCONA’s $18,078 budget.
“It’s one of the most success
ful drives we have ever had in
Mexico,” commented SCONA Fi
nance Chairman Henry Cisneros
of San Antonio. “And the finance
committee delegates gained a
great deal of international ex
perience.”
Among the contributors was
the Mexico City Aggie Club,
which chipped in a $100 check.
Other donations came from in
dustrial and business leaders.
“We expect Mexico contribu
tions to total $1,300 for a new
record in Mexico,” Cisneros added.
“Altogether, we have pledges for
$13,388 of the $14,000 that is to
be raised through donations. The
rest will come from delegate
registration fees and the Memori
al Student Center Great Issues
Committee.”
Paul Lockey, chairman of the
Mexico finance drive, was joined
for the Mexico City jaunt by
Ralph Rayburn of Ingleside and
Derrick Bonewitz of Houston.
They dropped off Lawrence Stelly
of College Station and Roger
Engelke of Seguin to campaign
in Monterrey.
“We visited with some of the
top people in Mexico, attended
an embassy party and a univer
sity party, saw the Ballet Folk-
lorico in the Palace of Fine Arts,
and toured the Museum of Arche
ology,” Lockey recalled. “We also
toured the pyramids, the floating
gardens and the cathedral.”
For the first time, Aggie fund
raisers particpated in the Experi
ment in International Living
while on the campaign. They
stayed with Mexican families and
participated in family outings.
In Monterrey, Stelly and En
gelke spent a lot of time visiting
with the Mexicans and seeing
the scenery.
“We went mountain climbing,
to the bullfights, soccer matches
and Horse Tail Falls,” Stelly
commented. “Our family took us
to a fiesta in Saltillo where the
Indian dancers put on a wonder
ful show.”
“It was wonderful to visit with
people who had fresh ideas and
proposals for solutions to the
war in Viet Nam,” he added.
