E., Says Hubert Dr. Carl Landiss will become head of the Health and Physical Education Department at Texas A&M Sept. 1, Liberal Arts Dean Frank Hubert announced. Landiss succeeds Dr. Carl E. Fishier, who is retiring. The new health and physical education head has been a mem ber of the 12-man faculty since 1943. The department has 130 undergraduate majors and 45 graduate students. In addition, the faculty instructs and super vises a 4,300-student required physical education program. A full professor 13 years, Dr. Landiss chaired the department’s teacher education and graduate programs under Tishler. Other health and PE programs include required PE, intramurals and aquatics. Landiss said Dr. Linus J. Dow ell will head the teacher educa tion program. The department head received his bachelor degree at Abilene Christian College, the master at A&M and the Ed.D. at Pennsyl vania State in 1951. His experience includes more than 20 years teaching and sum mer activities. The Kansas City. Mo., Central High School gradu ate served two years in the Navy. He is a veteran Southwest Con ference football official. Landiss is president-elect of the 2,800-member Texas Associa tion for Health, Physical Educa tion and Recreation. He will head | the organization next year. Other memberships include Phi Delta Kappa and the College Physical Education Association. His research has been published | in CPEA’s “Proceedings” and the Research Quarterly. California Dean Featured Speaker At Leader’s Meet Dr. John D. Lawson, associate dean of students at California Polytechnic College, will be a featured speaker for Texas A&M’s Leadership Conference Sept. 7-9 at Palestine. Conference Chairman Henry Cisneros of San Antonio predict ed participation of 175 student leaders from A&M and other uni versities in Region 12 of the As sociation of College Unions. The conference is scheduled at the Lakeview Methodist Assembly Camp. Dr. Lawson will discuss “Your Repertoire of Leadership Skills— Democratic Leadership: Motiva tion and Communication.” Keynote address will be given by Dr. William A. Luker, head of A&M’s Business Analysis De partment. “Concept of Leader ship” is his topic. Another major speaker is Dr. Martin Erickson, department ex ecutive vice president, University of Utah, Association of National Training Laboratories, National Education Agency. He will dis cuss “Introduction to Sensitivity.” Dr. William P. Fife, acting head of A&M’s Biology Depart ment, will speak on “All Work and No Play . . . Sports” and Robert L. Boone, director of A&M’s Singing Cadets, will cover “Art, Music and Literature.” An etiquette panel will spot light Texas Woman’s University coeds Bruni Alanez, Donna But ler, Pat Calliham and Pat Bor- iskie. A second presentation by Dr. Lawson, “Problem Solving in Groups — Committee Work — the Management Audit.” Conference wrap-ups on the topic, “What I Have Learned About Leadership Since I Left College,” are scheduled by Dr. H. O. Kunkel, acting head of A&M’s College of Agriculture, and Don Cloud, merchandising manager for Allied Milles of Chicago. Cloud was commander of the A&M Corps of Cadets in 1959. Conferees also will have the opportunity to visit with three members of the administration— Academic Vice President Wayne C. Hall, Dean of Students James P. Hannigan and Commandant of Cadets Col.
