Moffett, director. CATE will make classroom pre sentations on a 15-school system blackboard-by-wire (BBW) net work this fall and is developing a computer-assisted instruction program. Moffett said the staff includes Ralph E. Foster, assistant direct or; Mrs. Jean Hewitt, office man ager and receptionist; Miss Joan Moore, graphic artist, and Jack Longbotham and D.. P. Ney, co ordinators. Foster, 40, is also an analyst programmer in addition to assist ant director duties. He received the bachelor degree at the Uni versity of Texas and is candidate for a masters in industrial engi neering at A&M. The former Navy officer came to A&M from Dallas and was an accountant for ALCOA at Rock dale and Stanolind Oil and Gas, Odessa. Miss Moore develops instruc tional materials for the BBW net work and also works in publica tions and displays. She was \yith the art department of Agricultur al Information at A&M. Moffett said Mrs. Hewitt handl es program inquiries, which should be addressed to Building “D” at A&M. BBW will become operational in Octobjer, interconnecting 15 school systems by leased tele phone line. Special advanced courses for enriching curricula will be presented by selected classroom teachers of the schools. Faculty Four professors and an instruc tor have been added to the Me- i chanical Engineering Depart ment faculty at Texas A&M Uni versity, announced Dr. C. M. Sim- mang, head. New appointments include Dr. Howard S. Wolko, professor; Dr. H. Richard Thornton, associate professor; Rufus E. Martin, as sistant professor, and Swiki A. Anderson, instructor. On Sept. 1, when Wolko, Mar tin and Anderson appointments are effective, the department will have a 26-man faculty. The de partment is the College of Engi neering’s largest, with about 515 students, Simmang said. Dr. Wolko, 42, comes to A&M from NASA where he was chief of structural mechanics and re entry structures. The professor earlier was with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Bell Aircraft, Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory and American Optical. He holds degrees from the Uni versity of Buffalo and recently received the Doctor of Sciences at George Washington University. He will be on part-time teach ing assignment in the department and a Texas Engineering Experi ment Station research engineer. “Dr. Wolko will have primary responsibility for developing A&M research in mechanical engineer ing,” Simmang noted. Dr. Thornton, who joined the faculty in June after four years with General Dynamics/Fort Worth, is on halftime teaching and TEES assignment. The pro fessor, 34, was a University of Illinois research associate and was with the National Bureau of Standards three years. Thornton’s doctorate in cera mic engineering from the Urbana university was awarded in 1963. Degrees in glass technology are from Alfred (N.Y.) University. He will conduct TEES research in composite materials as associate research engineer. Martin, 33, has been connected with NASA since 1961. He was a Langley Research Center aero space engineer a year and at the Manned Spacecraft Center was in structures and mechanics. The assistant professor will also be on part-time appointment at TEES, working with Dr. Thomas J. Kozik in stress analysis of thin structural shells. Martin came to A&M from NASA for doctorate work with the Ph.D. to be award ed in January, 1968. He earned other degrees at Mississippi and Houston Universities. Martin is married, has a daughter and re sides at 1209 Marsteller. Anderson, 27, attended A&M and received bachelor and master degrees at Lamar State. He will study for a Ph.D. while teaching. A project engineer at Shell Chem ical, Anderson was instructor at San Jacinto Junior College. He is from Port Arthur.
