Continual improvement describes Gene Stallings’ aim
as head coach of the Texas Aggies and the 1967 edition,
despite problems and uncertainties, should be better than
the previous two that the young Texan produced at Aggie-
land.
The 1966 club won 4, lost 5 and tied one and that’s
the best Aggie record since the identical reading of 4-5-1
in 1961 and the 8-3-0 mark of 1957. It was an improve
ment over the 3-7 record compiled by Stallings’ first Aggie
club in 1965.
One of the primary problems is finding replacements
for the 19 players who concluded their eligibility last fall.
Thirteen of those 19 earned three varsity letters at A&M
and a lot of playing experience was lost through their
departures.
The 1967 Aggies again will be young. There are
only six seniors on the squad. Fifteen of the 21 returning
lettermen are juniors and at least a dozen sophomores
figure to be among the playing personnel.
The backfield shapes up as one of A&M’s strong points
while the line poses questions and uncertainties.
Graduation virtually wiped out the starting line, tak
ing such key performers as split end Larry, tackles Ed
Breding and Jack Pyburn, guards Don Koehn and Gary
Kovar and center Jim Singleton.
This necessitated a number of position changes during
spring training as Stallings made his rebuilding plans. All-
America tackle Maurice (Mo) Moorman moved over a
couple of steps to fill a guard slot and defensive tackle
Rolf Krueger slipped into Moorman’s old position at tackle.
Fullback Dan Schneider moved to the other tackle slot
while a host of candidates bid for starting berths at center
and the other guard position.
Only tight end Tom Buckman and split end Tommy
Maxwell can be classified as returning starters at their
1966 positions and Maxwell, who missed the latter part of
spring training because of an injury, has quite a battle
before him if he is to dislodge sophomore Jimmy Adams
from the split end post.
The Aggies can field an all-letterman backfield of
either Edd Hargett or Charlie Riggs at quarterback, Bill
Sallee at fullback, Wendell Houseley at tailback and Bob
Long at wingback.
THE NEW LOOK OF KYLE FIELD, AND CADET SLOUCH WELCOME THE AGGIES TO AGGIELAND.
Sophomores to be reckoned with include tailbacks
Ross Brupbacher, Arthur Cooley and Max Clark; full-
’ backs Larry Stegent and Bruce Kemph and wingbacks
Barney Harris and Bill Seely.
