Spurns Atlanta
The Atlanta Braves’ loss is
Texas A&M’s gain as Billy
Hodge, catcher for B r y a n’s
Stephen F. Austin High School
baseball team last year, Tuesday
turned down the Braves’ final
offer in order to attend A&M on
a football scholarship.
He will also play baseball while
at A&M.
“We appreciated the Braves’
offer,” Bill Hodge, Sr. said,
“and we felt that we had to con
sider the offer in fairness to
Atlanta. But we felt that A&M
is more important.

A&M.
Matson, 6-6 Vk, 260-pounder, will
not receive his bachelor’s degree
in management until next spring
but hopes to start work on his

Big Randy, who has a pending
world-record shot put of 71 feet,
514 inches, was one of 22 student-
athletes who were honored by the
NCAA. The awards, covering 12
sports, bring to 70 the number
of $1,000 scholarship awarded to
deserving senior athletes during
this academic year.
An A&M official, in recom
mending Matson for the scholar
ship award, said: “Randy is a
near perfect example of what a
collegiate athlete should be.”
Matson holds the American
record of 213-914 in the discus
and won a silver medal (second
place) in the shot put during the
1964 Olympics.
He is not in school this sum
mer but is competing in meets
all over the world.
Mistovich Gets
MeKale Award
Mike Mistovich, “the voice of
the Texas Aggies,” has won the
first annual J. F. MeKale special
award for service to college base
ball.
The new award is given in
memory of J. F. (Pop) MeKale,
recently-deceased baseball coach
emeritus at the University of Ari
zona and one of the founders of
the American Association of Col
lege Baseball Coaches.
Mistovich’s award was an
nounced during the recently-com
pleted NCAA College World
Series here by a special commit
tee of the National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Assn.
Mistovich, president and gen
eral manager of Bryan’s KORA,
won the award on the basis of his
broadcasts on the Aggie Network.
In the committee’s apinion, his
broadcasts of all A&M games —
home and road — go far toward
stimulating and maintaining a
high degree of interest in South
west Conference baseball.
