ENGLISH MAJOR
Beverly Holt, of Bryan, is an English major at A&M this
summer. She is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin High
School in Bryan and plans to be a school teacher.
Department goes on duty in
Korea, he may spend a lot of
time answering Aggie exe’s ques
tions about 1967 football pros
pects.
The assistant professor of mili
tary science has been advisor to
the Army ROTC athletic com
pany, H-l, and became well ac
quainted with Coach Gene Stall
ings' team.
“I believe A&M’s prospects are
pretty good,” the 30-year-old of
ficer said. “The team has good
front-line talent and there are
some good sophomores on the
way.”
Miller, a 1959 A&M graduate,
has been on A&M Military assign
ment since 1965, instructing
freshman courses. He will leave
Fort Lewis, Wash., July 22 for
assignment with Headquarters,
8th Army Support Command at
Seoul in the director of security,
plans and operations.
“I would have preferred Viet
nam,” he said.
The captain, married and fath
er of a one-month-old son, goes
on leave Monday and plans to
spend most of it in class at
A&M 1 . He’s taking demography
and administration of higher edu
cation this session and will have
22 hours toward a master of sci
ence degree in education.
“I’ll apply to return to A&M
fulltime as a student after the
13-month Korean tour,” the Over-
ton native said. “I’ll lack only |
four hours and the thesis for the
degree.” Under Operation Boot
strap, the Army assigns officers
in one semester of graduation.
The instructor also plans some
golf during his pre-shipment
leave, and has already arranged
18 holes with varsity football
manager J. P. Ellis of Atlanta.
Ellis was H-l company command
er for Captain Miller.
Also the Ross Volunteers com
pany advisor, Miller was a Dis
tinguished Military Graduate and
received a Regular Army com
mission from A&M. He served
three years in Germany, attended
and instructed in the U. S. Army
Chemical School at Fort McClel
land, Ala., and was a training
company CO at the post.
Dresser Assigned
To White House
Capt. Paul A. Dresser, Texas
A&M’s cadet colonel of the corps
in 1963-64, is now on duty assign
ment in the White House.
Dresser is Army assistant to
President Johnson’s military aide
in the office of the president.
The A&M graduate was injured
in Viet Nam last February while
commanding a Green Beret unit.
He received serious injuries from
an exploding booby trap in an
old French fort near the Cam
bodian border.
Would you like to have beer
with your meal at the Sbisa cash
cafeteria ? Well, now you can—
as long as it's root, or apple beer.
These two new drinks were
added to the Sbisa menu this
week.
“Apple beer is actually carbo
nated apple juice,” according to
Col. Fred Dollar, food services
director, “and I think it’s really
good.”
Dollar mentioned that those
who would like to have a 12-oz.
charcoal-broiled steak with their
root or apple beer can now have
both without even leaving the
campus.
Last week, the Sbiso cafeteria
began serving charcoaled steaks
to those students, faculty mem
bers and campus guests who re
quested them.
“We've had quite a few order
these steaks since we began,” he
said. “It’s just a service we offer
to those who wish to dine a little
more elaborately, yet not leave
the campus.”
Dollar said food service facili
ties will be open for those stu
dents who are required to remain
on campus for July 4. The MSC
snack bar will be open from 8 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Facilities in Sbisa will
be closed, but will open as usual
at 7 a.m. July 5.
VETERAN COOK
Willie Howard, College Station, has been a cook at Sbis
dining hall for more than 27 years. During this time, li
says he has cooked more than 50,000 steaks for Ad):
athletes, students and guests. Above, he prepares steak
for Sbisa customers for their evening meal.

A public relations and tourism
expert says Bryan and College
Station merchants and business
men are ill prepared for the big
American Institute of Biological
Sciences meetings to be held here
Aug. 27-Sept. 1.
“They don’t realize what’s go
ing to hit them,” said Frank A.
Driskill, a Texas A&M graduate
who is now with the Distributive
Education Department of the Uni
versity of Texas.
Driskill, who is lecturing on the
subject this week to members of
the Bryan-College Station Res
taurant Association, said he was
“quite concerned that we’re un
aware completely” of the impact
the thousands of scientists and
their wives will make on the area.
He notes this was one of the
smallest communities ever to host
meetings of the AIBS.
Between 4,000 and 5,000 scien
tists are expected to register for
the meetings. Adding wives and
children, the total influx of people
might reach 7,000, Driskill said.
“The big problem we are going
to have here is the same problem
which is causing the tourist busi
ness to lag in Texas—‘What to do
at night?’ Florida keeps tourists
an average of 11.5 days while
Texas keeps them 5.9 days. It’s
something to do at night. In 1966,
Texas did $900 million in tourist
business but Florida did $3.6
billion, or four times that much,
with only 15 per cent more tour
ists,” he noted in a talk before
25 persons att he Lone Star Gas
Co. Monday.
The lectures by Driskill were
arranged by Mrs. Chris Norton,
past president of the local restau
rant association chapter.
“My fellow restauranteurs are
as complacent as they can be,”
she said. “Frankly, I’m worried.”
Driskill estimated the- AIBS
participants will spend up to
$750,000 in this area.
He suggested a series of ranch
tours with horseback riding, per
haps some visits to a cattle auc
tion and other events to keep the
visitors entertained.
