I Disc Jockey Day For Jaycees

The Bryan-College Station Jay
cees were disc jockeys during
their Radio Day project last
Saturday.
“The purpose of this project is
to raise money by selling radio
advertising to the local merchants
at the rate of three one-minute
spots for $12,” said Jim Wright,
project chairman.
“The money is used later to
finance numerous Jaycee service
projects such as the Labor Day
rest stop, the Christmas toy
drive, the Christmas shopping
tour for underprivileged children,
and the Boy’s Club Athletic Field
built last year,” said Wright.
‘This year we made $2306 gross
profit — $450 more than last
year.”
Radio time was donated by the
station managers Bill Watkins of
WTAW and Mike Mistovich of
KORA.” A $50 check will be sent
to each of them in appreciation,”
said Wright.
Wright began the advertising
sales campaign by dividing the
club into two teams — the White
team, captained by Cliff Wall-
stein, and the Blue team, led by
Jose Grimaldo. ‘‘The team that
sells the fewer ads will suffer the
consequences,” said Wright, who
would not divulge the punish
ment until carried out later this
week.
Prizes were offered to the three
top salesmen. First prize was a
pair of shoes from Conway & Co.,
won by Roy Frenzel; second prize
was 10,000 Gold Bond stamps
from Piggley Wiggley, awarded
to Grimaldo; and third prize
was a shirt from the Varsity
Shop, won by Dr. Rodney Bobbitt.
A prize was also given to the
top salesman of the week for
two weeks prior to the broadcast
date. The first week Dr. Bobbitt
won a free luncheon at the club
meeting. The second week Fren
zel won a large aerial color
photograph of Texas A&'M' Uni
versity.
Team competition was won by
Grimaldo’s Blue team by less
than a $200 margin.
Each person selling over $100
of advertising was awarded mem
bership in the Century Club, an
honorary position within the B-
CS Jaycees.
The Jaycees used WTAW from
8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and KORA from
8 a.m. to 11 p.m. They worked
in pairs at each station on one-
hour shifts organized by John
Birkner, sub-committee chairman.
“The Jaycees tremendously en
joyed working on the project and
wish to thank the radio stations
and the participating merchants
for their cooperation, without
which,” Wright said, “the B-CS
Jaycees could not carry on their
projects during the coming year.”
