SWC Football Is
Fall TV Feature
The American Broadcasting
Company has announced its
schedule for televising NCAA
football next fall and the South
west Conference figures largely
in their plans.
ABC acknowledged that the
SWC schools would be among the
nation’s finest as it plans to
have more SWC teams on na
tional television than any other
conference.
Four SWC teams will be seen
on nationwide broadcasts. Texas
A&M and Southern Methodist
will kick off the season in a
game at College Station on Sept.
16.
On Oct. 21 the Texas Long
horns and the Arkansas Razor-
backs will play before a national
audience.
Clay Kayoed With
Sentence And Fine
A white jury of six men and
six women deliberated for a half-
hour Wednesday and then re
turned a verdict of guilty against
former heavyweight champion
Cassius Clay on criminal charges
of refusing induction into the
armed forces.
U. S. Dist. Judge Joe Ingraham
then sentenced Clay to five years
in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Afterwards Clay said that he
was not surprised at the verdict.
“Everything that has happened
or will happen has already been
prophesied by the prophet, Eli
jah Muhammed,” Clay said. Eli
jah Muhammed is the head of the
Black Muslims, the religious sect
to which Clay belongs. It was
Clay’s contention in the trial
that he is a muslim minister and
is therefore not eligible for the
draft.
The ex-champion was released
on a $5,000 appeal bond after
the trial.
Clay said that while his case
is going through the process of
appeal he may fight in a few ex
hibition bouts and will probably
take a vacation, possibly to the
Bahamas.
The case is not expected to be
settled soon and there is specu
lation that it may drag through
the courts for months or even a
year.
