An historic old propeller keeps
churning along at Texas A&M.
Local campusology has it that
the propeller used to drive A&M’s
wind tunnel came off the Enola
Gay, the B-29 which dropped the
first atomic bomb on Hiroshima
Aug. 6, 1945.
While neither confirming nor
denying this legend, Dr. Richard
E. Thomas, associate aerospace
engineering professors, says there
is little doubt the propeller was
specially designed for the world’s
first atomic operation.
Dr. Thomas, who directs A&M’s
wind tunnel projects, notes this
particular propeller is made of
aluminum, rather than steel which
normally is used for propellers.
Aluminum propellers, he ex
plained, would reduce the weight
of an aircraft, a critical factor for
a B-29 carrying an atomic pay-
load.
The popeller was obtained from
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base
in 1959.
Whatever its military applica
tion of more than two decades ago,
the large four-bladed propeller is
now aiding in the research and
testing of various aerodynamic
projects having both military and
commercial ramifications.
Installed in a 7xl0-foot find
tunnel at A&'M’s Easterwood Air
port, the propeller was used in
1963 for low-speed stability tests
leading to the design of the Gem
ini space capsule. More recently,
it has been employed for research
in the development of Bell heli
copters and LTV jet fighters now
being used in Viet Nam.
One of its more unusual appli
cations, Dr. Thomas recalls, in
volved simulating wind velocities
to test the structural design for
the space needle at San Antonio’s
HemisFair next year.
The propeller also has seen
service in various experiments
testing the wind resistance of the
new safer “break-away” highway
signs designed and developed by
A&M’s Texas Transportaiton In
stitute.

The rose comes very close to man’s standard of perfection. Its delicate
beauty seems to mock every effort of the artist or camera to capture it.
But is the rose really God’s masterpiece? Hardly!
For its beauty is passive. It brightens life only for those who seek
it out and gaze upon it. And in but a few days it withers and is ugly.
God’s masterpiece is MAN. For with all his waywardness and selfish
ness, Man is capable of reflecting the love of God. When he lets God touch
his life he is able to bring happiness and faith to others. He doesn’t have
to wait until he is noticed. He can actively bring spiritual blessings to
his fellow men.
As the gardener cultivates the rose, the Church cultivates the lives
of men. Always it strives to help us become all that God wants us to be.
