INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (^ > )—A. J. Foyt, never quitting in spite of an apparently hopeless battle against a fantastic aircraft en gine, won the rain-delayed 500- mile Memorial Day auto race Wednesday for the third time. Pamelli Jones, Torrance, Calif., apparently had the race locked up when his STP-Pratt & Whitney turbine car failed with only 7% miles to go. The engine was run ning when he limped into the pits with a bearing failure. Foyt set a race record of 151.207 miles per hour against the 1965 mark of 150.686 by Jim my Clark of Scotland. Five cars piled up at the head of the mainstretch just as the Houston ace approached the mainstretch and no other cars completed the full 200 laps. Foyt threaded his way through the tangle and reached victory circle by way of the pit apron. The victory was all the sweeter because Foyt Enterprises built the winning Coyote Ford to Foyt’s own specifications — and because he had a miserable sea son last year involving three wrecks. He was one of the driv ers knocked out in the 1966 first lap pileup of 16 cars in the 500 last year. He won previously in 1961 and 1964 and now has a three-for-10 mark at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Only Louis Meyer, Mauri Rose and Wilbur Shaw, before Foyt, had been three-time winners. All positions except Foyt’s were unofficial. The race was stopped just as Foyt crossed the finish line because of the smash up on the mainstretch. Positions will be awarded according to laps completed at that time. Denis Hulme of New Zealand was fourth unofficially in a Ea gle-Ford; Jim McElreath of Ar lington, Tex., fifth in a Moore- Ford, and Jones was placed sixth in the turbine on the basis of laps completed. Chuck Hulse of Los Angeles was seventh in a Lotus turbo charged Offy; Art Pollard of Medford, Ore., eighth in a Ger- hardt turbo-charged Offy; Bob by Unser, Al’s brother from Al buquerque, ninth in an Eagle- Ford, and Bob Veith of San Lor enzo, Calif., tenth in a Gerhardt turbo-charged Offy. Jones had been running away from the field Tuesday when the race was halted at 45 miles be cause of rain. He took up at the same place in the single-file re start Wednesday. He surrendered the lead only three times to Foyt, twice on the two compulsory pit stops.
