UNIVERSITY LOAN COMPANY 317 Patricia (North Gate) College Station, Texas Telephone: 846-8319 “For a Few Dollars More” brings back Clint Eastwood as the nameless, reticent gun fighter who wanders the Italian waste lands in search of adventure and money. Of course the average movie goer can’t tell that the scenery is not authentic western unless he reads the titles carefully at the first of the movie, or unless he has read some smart-aleck movie reviewer who gave it away. Overheard in one of the seats behind: “I’ll bet this was shot out near El Paso; those mountains look familiar.” That was the over-all effect of the entire movie. There was little that could be called fake-looking. The sets were authentic, the char acterizations were believable and intriguing, and the action was fast-paced. This movie is the second in a series of three, all starring Clint Eastwood and all shot in a part of Italy that resembles the Ameri can Southwest and northern Mexico. The first was “Fistful of Dol lars,” in which Eastwood played an unnamed character who ar rives at a small Mexican town and encounters a feud between two of the leading families. He plays each side against the other and winds up almost the sole sur vivor, but with plenty of money. In “For a Few Dollars More,” he goes from town to town in search of outlaws to eliminate for the bounty money. He seems to have found his little niche in this profession. The idea here is that since no body is perfect, more people will identify wtih a hero who has faults just as they do. The only problem is that it’s sometimes hard to tell the good guy from the bad guy, because each has his own faults and virtues. These two movies solve this by leaving their hero as he is, but making the villain as low and despicable as possible. And they do a good job of it. The theme of “For a Few Dol lars More” is the stalking of an outlaw band by two bounty hunt ers who conflict at first, but end up joining forces. It may come as a shock to those who have seen the first movie that there is some one who is as good, if not better with a gun as Eastwood is. Both men are after the same outlaw, El Indio, and his band of 14 men, and neither wants to have competition. So naturally they join forces. Anyone who has seen “Fistful of Dollars” wont be surprised by the amount of killing and other types of violence that take place in the second movie. This very fact accounts for much of its attraction. Few movies have gone so far as to actually build a plot on sadism, but these do, and they do it in good taste. The one thing noticeably absent from the movie was sex, but none of the audience seemed to notice, or if they did notice, they didn’t seem to mind. This is strange considering the fact that 99% of them were Aggies. The announcer on the previews of the movie says it is the first of its kind, but it won’t be the last. He’s right in that there are two more. But let’s hope they don’t end there. These movies are indeed original, and they provide good entertainment. Other movie makers should take notice.
