PH.T.’S AWARDED Texas A&M’s graduation date can’t be far off when Aggie wives get their Ph.T. degrees for “putting hubby through.” Ruth Ann Clinkscales, wife of a chemical engineering ma jor, and Barbara Knox, whose husband Mike is also grad- | uating, recall the “degree” requirements they had to fulfill. A new life-saving highway light post which breaks free from its base when struck by a vehicle is now being tested at Texas A&M. A&M’s Texas Transportation Institute staged the first full- scale test in the project this week by catapulting a sedan into a 38- foot steel post at 40 mph. The vehicle sustained only mi nor damage. Ford Dealer of impact was in the vicinity of the left front fender, the glass on the headlight remained intact. Dr. Thomas C. Edwards, TTI project supervisor, said there is every reason to believe that a passenger in the test car would have been unharmed. The A & 1\^ highway research organization is conducting the light post project for the Texas Highway Department in coopera tion with the U. S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Public Roads. The program is funded by an $87,000 one-year contract. Dr. Edwards said the light post base is similar to the one used in TTI’s highly successful break-away highway sign proj ect. The break-away sign has been adopted by the THD and several other state highway departments. Little damage and no injuries have been reported in the more than 50 known accidents involv ing these new signs. Both the signs and light posts rest on bases with slip joints which release when struck by ve hicles. While giving way under impact, the posts resist wind just as well as if embedded in the ground, Dr. Edwards noted. Student Designs Being Presented Winning student designs of a home caddy, drawing table, play ground apparatus and hunting seat were formally presented by Engineering Graphics 106 fresh men at Texas A&M Wednesday, Thursday and today. Visiting engineers, professors and other students will receive the team reports on design proj ects initiated at the first of the semester, according to Dr. James H. Earle, department head. Each class of 30 to 36 students was divided equally to work on three projects and assigned prob lems in February. Practicing en gineers from over the state visit ed classes in March to consult with students on the projects. The three best three-student team solutions per class will be presented in the three-day pe riod. “The department is attempting to provide freshmen engineering students with a better under standing of engineering and its application through the coopera tion of visiting engineers from various industries,” Earle said. The course, in which 550 students are enrolled, is structured to in troduce the student to engineer ing design, problem solving, en gineering application and engi neering communications. ‘Centrex’ Utilizes Tunnels Fo r Reliable Phone Service Engineering a telephone cable across a swampy river bottom or up the side of a mountain is rather routine for telephone engi neers, but wandering through the steam tunnels under a university campus is a new experience for them. In order to provide the new Centrex telephone service throughout the A&M campus, telephone cables between the various buildings will be placed in the steam tunnels. Not only will this help improve the ap pearance of the campus, but it will also offer more protection for the facilities and improve the reliability of the service. The new Centrex system sched uled for September 1968, will in effect be a telephone switching center designed exclusively for the campus. Among other im provements it will offer room telephones in the dorms, and will allow callers to dial directly to any telephone on the system with out going through a campus operator. Engineering for this project is underway, and construction is scheduled to start in early 1968. One of the initial construction phases will find work crews fol lowing the footsteps of the engi neers as they place the new cables through the steam tunnels.
