Hartack Still
» Has No Horse
By ORLO ROBERTSON
s Hoj LOUISVILLE, Ky. <A>) _ Bill
Hartack, horse racing’s most con
fer troversial figure with an enviable
! riding record, found himself in the
liib middle again Wednesday. It in-
30 pj volved which horse he’ll ride in
the 93rd running of the Kentucky
Derby Saturday.
Frank Childs, 79-year-old dean
of Kentucky Derby trainers who
saddled Tomy Lee, the 1959 win
ner, said the four-time national
riding champion and winner of
four Kentucky Derbies in seven
tries will be aboard Perne Gris
som’s California conditioned Dr.
Isby.
Earlie Fires worked Dr. Isby
Wednesday morning, going one
mile in 1:41 3-5.
Hal Steele Jr., trainer of Der
by Trial winner Barbs Delight,
said he wants Hartack and the
veteran jockey has promised to
give him an answer Thursday
morning before the entries for
the Derby are made officially.
“The decision is not mine to
make,” said Hartack after he was
seen talking with Childs. He
later conferred with Steele, who
also owns Barbs Delight along
with Gene Spalding and Guy
Huguelet of Lexington, Ky.
Being in the middle or at odds
with the press is nothing new for
the native of Johnstown, Pa.
In his younger days he was
known as Willie. He later insist
ed he be addressed as Bill.
He repeatedly has refused to
talk with newspapermen and
three years ago held up an in
terview with writers for 30 min
utes while he signed autographs
after winning his fourth Derby
with Northern Dancer.
Hartack had expressed a desire
to ride Dr. Isby after the Detroit-
owned colt finished fourth in the
California Derby April 22. But
when Barbs Delight won the
Derby Trial he let friends know
he would like very much to ride
Barbs Delight in Saturday’s
{125,000-added race.
Post time Saturday will be 4:30
p.m., EST, with nationwide tele
vision by CBS down for 4-5 p.m.,
EST.
