Page 4 College Station, Texas Thursday, April 20, 1967 THE BATTALION MSC Council Slates Dinner The Texas A&M Memorial Stu dent Center Council and Direc torate Banquet is set Thursday night, with an estimated 36 per sons to be honored. Steve Gummer of San Antonio, president of the MSC Council and Directorate, said the banquet is the highlight of the year for the entire program. To be honored are members of the various committees of the council and directorate as well as their faculty-staff advisors. Gummer said up to 25 “Appre ciation Awards” will be pre sented. Special recognition also will be given to persons winning the “Distinguished Achievement Awards.” Summer Jobs Are Available At Placement Office, YMCA Students who plan to go to summer school and want to work part-time may find a job for which they are qualified at the Placement Office. Part-time jobs are listed and placed on a clipboard in the Placement Office. Some of the jobs are available now—some for summer and some are available now and will carry on through the summer. After finding a job he is inter ested in, the student must sign on the form provided and get a reference list from Student Em ployment Clerk Mrs. Barbara Hudetts. The reference list serves to introduce the student to the firm or individual desiring help. If the student secures a job on the Texas A&M campus, he must Office Part- return to the Placement and complete a Student Time Employment application. Another prerequisite for on- campus employment is a physical from the University Hospital. Mrs. Hudetts emphasized that she did not secure the jobs for the students, but merely served as a liaison between employers and prospective employes. Some of the positions available at the present time are for brick layers and manual labor, farm workers, workers to assist in various departments of the uni versity, and part-time help for Bryan-College Station businesses. Mrs. Hudetts expects additional job listings to keep coming in, especially from area businessmen and university departments. Biggest prize of all is the Thomas H. Rountree Award, which recognizes an outstanding member of the MSC Council or Directorate who has made a sig nificant contribution to the recre ational, educational and cultural programs of the organization. The Rountree Award was established last year in memory of Thomas H. Rountree, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1955. Gummer noted that Rountree earlier served the MSC Directorate and led the way in establishing outstanding student programs at A&M. Mr. and Mrs. J. L, H. Roun tree, parents of Thomas H. Roun tree, will present the award to a student who has attained promi nence through his efforts to de velop the MSC Council and Directorate objectives. Among new council officers to be installed during the banquet are Scott Roberts of Austin, president-elect of the MSC Coun cil and Directorate. Wayne H. Prescott of Houston will be in stalled as vice president of the organization. A group representing the Stu dent Senate will provide enter tainment with songs, dances and skits. Another spotlight event of the evening is the state of the union and farewell address by Gummer. Former Students Slates Banquet DFC AWARDED AGGIE Capt. Thomas W. Shinn receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for combat valor in Vietnam. Col. Vernon L. Head, professor of aerospace studies at Texas A&M, pinned the medal on the Laurel, Miss., native who flew 660 missions. Rodeo Glib Members Will Participate In Several Rodeos The Former Students Associa tion’s induction banquet for the class of ’67 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., May 1, in Sbisa Hall. A different feature in this year’s banquet will be the elec tion of class representative. Be fore, the representative has been elected in a general election but this year, he will be selected at the banquet. “In the past, selecting class representative in the general elec tion has proved unsatisfactory due to the small turnout,” Terrell S. Mullins, senior class social secretary, said. Donald R. Cloud, ’58-’59 cadet colonel of the Corps, will speak at the banquet. Cloud, also a graduate of the Harvard Uni versity Business School, is now in business in Fort Worth. Free tickets to the banquet are available in the Former Student Association office in the Memo rial Student Center. Seniors interested in applying for class representative should see Mike Calloway in Dormitory 4, Room 417, or leave their name in the Student Program Office in the MSC, according to Mullins. Elected for a five year term, the class representative gathers information for the news letter that is sent to members of the class each year and plans the first reunion at the end of five years when another election is held. Ag Billiards Champ Plays Next weekend will be a busy one for Aggie Rodeo Club mem bers who participate in inter collegiate contests. Two rodeos are scheduled for the weekend. One will be at Lee Junior College at Baytown. The PEANUTS By Charles M. Schulz PEANUTS ‘ BUT A 6RIN WITHOUT A CAT.' The 60-story Gothic tower that F. W. Woolworth built on lower Broadway in New York in 1913 was hailed as a “cathedral of Commerce.” Woolworth thought of it as a “sky sign” to adver tize his five and 10-cent stores. Food Services is planning the addition of two new cafeteria lines at Sbisa Hall in the fall. Col. Fred Dollar of the Food Services Department announced Wednesday that his department is about to award a contract to one of a half-dozen firms bidding on two new cafeteria lines to be added to the present facilities of Sbisa Mess Hall’s Cash Cafeteria. The contract will be awarded on April 27. Another addition now in the planning stages will be glass doors, Dollar noted, to replace those heavy metal ones now in use at Sbisa’s south entrance. The doors will be solid glass, from floor to ceiling. “Those new doors will provide better lighting for the students who will be eating in Sbisa next year,” Dollar added. Brown flew to Oregon from College Station Wednesday. All his expenses to, from and whilt at the tournament will be paid for by the Association of College Unions. The Region 12 championship was won by Brown during the weekend of March 3-4 at an Asso ciation of College Unions’ tourna ment at the University of Texas. Ballinger To Describe A&M Honors Program Texas A&M’s honors program will be described at a Southern Honors Symposium April 21-22 at Tulane University by Richard H. Ballinger. The A&M English professor will present a paper, “Establish ing an Honors Program at Texas Automobile Holds Would You Believe Thirty Passengers MIAMI, Fla. (A*) — Thirty peo ple in one station wagon was enough for police officer Russell Leesburg. He stopped the groaning vehi cle in northwest Miami and said besides the driver, Flora Dickin son, it contained four persons on the front seat and 25 children, 1 to 2 years old, in the rear. The woman was charged with operating an unlicensed nursery school and carrying a concealed pistol. She also was charged on two excessive passenger counts. The children were taken to a welfare shelter while police sought to learn their parents’ identities. They got virtually no help from the children, who were too young to tell. A&M University” at the sym posium’s first general session. Chairman of A&M’s honors pro gram for freshmen and sopho mores, Dr. Ballinger is one of several speakers, consultants and panel leaders who will discuss Southern colleges and universities programs. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard and has chaired the A&M honor program since its in ception in 1964. “The program’s aim is to offer the superior student special op portunities for academic work of range and depth appropriate to his capabilities and intellectual in terests,” Ballinger said.
