    Architects Design Civic Center
A fourth-year architecture
class at Texas A&M is discover
ing what Paris is like in spring
time.
Paris, Texas, that is.
The 33-man class of A&M’s
School of Architecture is design
ing a civic and convention center
for Paris and Lamar County.
“This is our major project for
the semester,” remarked Profes
sor Cecil Steward. “The class will
wrap up 10 weeks of work with
a series of presentations to civic
and county leaders the week of
May 22.”
Steward and Professor Mike
Schneider are heading the study
which involves surveys of maps,
site evaluation, drawings and
scale models.
“This kind of facility has to
be unique,” Steward observed. “It
must be able to accommodate
1,500 persons for conventions, 600
to 800 for theater performances,
1,500 for banquets, and 3,500 for
indoor sports events.”
No price tag has been placed on
the structure, but early estimates
range from $1.5 to $2 million,
Steward added.
The A&M students are develop
ing proposals which complement
a comprehensive plan developed
by Marvin Springer and Associ
ates, an urban planning consult
ing firm in Dallas.
Sponsors of the study are the
Paris Jaycees, the Altrusa Club,
the Rotary Club and the Noon
Lions Club. The support amounts
to approximately $1,500.
Schneider and Steward said the
project appeals to the students
because it gives them an oppor
tunity to develop design pro
grams from personal contact
with citizens interested in com
munity improvement.
Steward said Paris and Lamar
County residents will have the
opportunity to receive stimulation
from contact with students and
consider design ideas which may
be “somewhat uninhibited.”
The students are also studying
