THE BATTALION
Aggies Host Houston
By GARY SHERER
The Houston Cougars will
again be the competition tonight
when the Aggies take the Travis
Park field for a 7:30 game.
Monday afternoon, the Maroon
and White topped the Cougars,
6-4, at Houston.
THE GAME will mark the Ag
gie nine’s second night action of
the season. In their first night
game the Aggies whipped Texas
Tech 10-1 at Travis Park earlier
this month.
Houston is now 10-6 as a re
sult of Monday’s loss, while the
Aggies are 12-6 and have won
their last three.
Coach Tom Chandler is giving
the starting call to Walter Var-
vel who will be going to the hill
for his fifth starting assignment.
Varvel, former A&M Consolidated
hurler, is now 2-1 and sports a
2.83 ERA for his 22 innings.
Houston Coach Lovette Hill has
not announced his starting pitch
er, but it will probably be Bub-
ta Hill or Carroll Moore.
HOUSTON IS LED by its All-
America of last season, Ike Lucas.
The little outfielder has not had
as good a year at the plate this
year but is still hitting the ball
well. Leftfielder Tom Paciorek
and infielder Ken Hebert, both
footballers, are the leading fence
busters for the Cougars, with nine
extra base hits each.
Joe Staples continues to be the
top Aggie batter with a .333
average. Shortstop Mike Arring
ton has been creeping up on the
Aggie catcher all year and is now
at .321. These two are the only
regulars over .300.
C.E. Prof Honored
At Engineer Meet
The Texas A&M student post
of the Society of American Mili
tary Engineers was presented the
Distinguished Student Post Award
at a recent meeting.
The award was presented by
Brig. Gen. S. J. Buchanan (U.S.A.
ret.) professor of soil mechanics
in the Texas A&M Department
of Civil Engineering.
Gen. Buchanan was also the
main speaker at the meeting. He
spoke on the tremendous advances
being made in military engineer
ing.
The award, which was present
ed to Gary Menzies, president of
the Society, is based on the post’s
membership, character of meet
ings, speakers and subjects, and
reports submitted during the year
to the national headquarters of
the Society.
Arrington tops two other sta
tistic categories though, stolen
bases and runs scored. The sen
ior from Freeport has pilfered 11
bases while scoring 20 runs. Ar
rington has been the leadoff bat
ter most of the year and has
been able to get on base often
which is a prerequisite to for a
good leadoff man.
THE AGGIES lead the South
west Couference in stolen bases
with 36. Aggie opponents have
shown a respect for Staples’
throwing arm as only 11 bases
have been stolen by the 13 Ma
roon and White opponents.
In the pitching department, re
liefer Bob Sanders boasts the best
pitching credentials. The Hous
ton junior is now 4 r 0 for 31%
innings (all in relief) and has
posted a fine 1.72 ERA. Rocky
Thompson is 4-1 and the Kilgore
JC transfer has toiled 48% inn
ings and has a 2.96 ERA.
The Aggies are now 4-3 in
SWC play and currently in third
place. They get back into con
ference action this weekend at
Fort Worth with Friday and Sat
urday games with Texas Chris
tian. The Frogs are even in the
SWC with a 3-3 record and beat
the Aggies at Travis Park in
March. In that game the Aggies
stranded 17 men and lost the
game 6-0.

pound world record-holder likes
a big crowd to inspire him and
a large turnout just might bring
on another record performance
from him.
