A Bryan schoolteacher and
eight graduate assistants at Tex

Central American countries this
summer through Programa de
Educacion Interamericana.
The university intercultural
education project will send 35
Texas teachers to Argentina,
Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico and
Peru.
Mrs. Mary E. Vincent, Bryan
Public Schools modern languages
chairman, will be part of a
teacher-team touring South Bra
zil. The four teachers will visit
Belem, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte,
Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Curi
tiba, Port Alegre and Panama,
Brazil, and Caracas, Venezuela.
Educational attaches for each
teacher-team include Mrs. Amy
Mann of Norristown, Pa., with the
Mexico group; Argentina, Mrs.
Zorayda Ibarbia of Cagayan, Phi

North Brazil, Dr. Earl Jones,
Programa director.
“The attaches will be well-in
formed on all aspects of the coun
try and its educational system,”
Dr. Jones said. “They will be
familiar with travel arrangements
and assist teacher-members of his
team in any way possible.”
From tour teacher research,
Programa officials plan to de
velop units of study, curricular
materials, teaching guides and
other resources for use in Texas
schools.
Pre-trip orientation and de
briefing following the tours will
be held at A&M. Team travel
will be from late June until mid-
July, Jones noted. The project
is coordinated through the Bryan
Independent School District and
a Title III grant.
Mrs. Vincent has studied at
Mexican institutes and spent a
summer traveling in England,
France, Germany, Italy Switzer
land, Spain and Portugal.
A Brazos County native and
Bryan high graduate, she re

The Activation Analysis Re
search Laboratory brought one
of the world’s top 15 beauties to
the A&M campus.
Mrs. Ernest A. Uken, wife of
a Republic of South Africa sci
entist, is the reigning “Miss South
Africa” and one of 15 finalists
in the Miss World contest at Lon
don last November.
The Ukens will be in College
Station a year while he partici
pates in research headed by Dr.
Richard E. Wainerdi. Ernest is
on leave of absence as head of a
neutron activation lab of the
South Africa National Institute
for Metallurgy, a branch of the
Republic’s Atomic Energy Board.
A striking beauty, Mrs. Uken
is the former Miss Joan Carter
of Johannesburg and daughter of
a wheat and dairy farmer of the
Orange Free State. She is 5-feet-
8, blonde, hazel-eyed, plays ten
nis and is a perfect match for
her scientist husband.
“Miss South Africa,” who will
reign through August, received
her bachelor’s degree in zoology
and botany at Natal University
of Johannesburg in 1963. She
has worked in nutrition, biology
and medical research and is seek
ing employment here.
As representative to the Miss
World contest, she travelled all
over the 3,000-mile long Repub
lic for engagements, placing the
winner’s wreath on Pedro Rodri
gues when he won the Johannes
burg Grand Prix. She also went
to Portuguese East Africa to
crown “Miss Mozambique.”
Her duties completed, “Miss
South Africa” plans to paint,
study German and relax through
several sports she enjoys.
“I’m very keen on tennis,” the
South African-born beauty of
English descent said. “Ernest
and I like to swim and I’m fond
of squash, horseback riding and
watching horse and motor car
racing.”
Her father’s 3,000-acre farm
on the 5,000-foot high plateaus
of the High Veld taught her ap
preciation of outdoors.
“We are eager for the football
season,” Ernest said, voicing gen
eral Aggie anxiousness. “Rugby
is the closest thing South Africa
has to football. We’ve never seen
it before, except on film.”
He and Mrs. Uken met on the
tennis court and have been mar
ried a month. They arrived at
A&M three weeks ago.
The beauty winner said her
spare time goes to studying Ger-
“Ernest speaks German and his
mother converses in it exclusive
ly,” she explained. “I want to
be able to talk to her.” Joan
also speaks Afrikaans and Sotho,
a native dialect.
Ernest works with an inter
national set of scientists in acti
vation analysis at A&M. Others
involved in the joint research are
Drs. Herbert Yule, John S. His-
lop of Scotland, M'anchery P.
Menon of India and Emile Sch-
weikert of Switzerland. Ernest
received his master’s degree at
Natal in 1961 and is working on
a Ph.D. in nuclear physics. The
30-year-old scientist is a captain
in the Republic’s Army.
“I feel very fortunate to be
able to participate in this re
search,” Uken said. “Dr. Wein-
erdi’s activation analysis work is
known throughout the world.”
