Faster Recording System Aids Long Distance Calls Rauch Heads Session At Home Safety Meet John R. Rauch, an instructor in the Firemen’s Training Division of Texas A&M’s Engineering Ex tension Service, will chair a home safety session during a Texas Safety Association meeting Mon day through Wednesday in Hous ton. A faster method of recording information on long distance tele phone calls has been placed in effect in Southwestern States Telephone Company’s long dis tance center at Bryan. Called “mark sense” ticketing, the new procedure is described by Southwestern’s division manager Rex Bailey as “. . . a purely auto matic operation once it has passed from the operator’s hands.” “Although the improvements realized through the new method are not visibly apparent to the customer, this change represents a much faster more reliable and efficient means of recording in formation on long distance calls,” Bailey said. Using specially treated graph ite lead pencils, operators record information such as the area code, the called number and the calling number, whether the call is station to station, person to person, collect, etc., on elaborately designed IBM tickets with 370 separate boxes or “bubles.” “This new method requires use of the area code,” Bailey explained, “and it eliminates the need k giving the name of the tow called.” The tickets are shipped da!] to the company’s revenue accous ing center in San Angelo whet they are fed into IBM machine:] Tw which convert the data ink fiicel; punched cards, then tapes, 8« ^ r fi " a feicaij Guaranteed Meats !
