An Interesting
Team To Watch
By GARY SHERER
The ’66-’67 Ag-gie Basketball season is over. Trying
to say what kind of a season, though, is difficult.
Some of those Aggie supporters who didn’t show up
for any of the home games will say it was a losing season.
Others who did come to see the young team play will
say they were an interesting team to watch.

This then, is the best way to describe this basketball
team; interesting.
The season began back on Dec. 1 with a loss to Louisi
ana Tech, 53-50 on the G. Rollie White Coliseum floor.
Seventeen more losses and six wins followed this game
as the sophomore-laden team learned the ropes of college
basketball.
On the road, the team suffered most, as they lost all
of their games. Their home record was a little better,
as they compiled a 6-4 record on their own floor.
This writer will remember the season just ended
for other reasons. This team all year represented Texas
A&M well, and, on the basketball floor, though they were
outscored at times, they never quit.
Other reasons for remembering this aggregation pop
up in my mind, as the season is reviewed.
I won’t soon forget big Ronnie Peret making a bad
mistake and then coming back with a play that brought
cheers from the crowd. It will be hard to forget the looks
that Billy Bob Barnett got on his face while playing, that
said 100 per cent determination. A top memory is one
of Sonny Benefield’s fine 20-foot jump shots.
John Underwood's steady play and floor generalship
will be hard to forget. Another thought is Buzzy Myatt
going high for a rebound. I won’t forget Terry Trippet
coming down with what basketball experts call a “tough”
rebound. The sweeping hooks of Larry Ditto will be
remembered, as he revived the almost forgotten shot.
Of course, all these players will be back next year as
a more experienced group and will definitely win more
ball games.
There will be one part of this team missing next year.
That will be the leadership of captain Dick Rector. The
senior from Dumas was the lone fourth-year man on this
squad and he will be missed. Rector didn’t play as much
this year as in previous seasons, but he still made his
presence felt when he was in the game.
With as much playing time as this team logged this
year, it will be an experienced team that will represent
Aggie basketball fortunes next year.
The Fish team finished second in the Southwest Con
ference freshmen race this year.
Coach Jim Culpepper got some good performances from
his regular starting five of Bill Brown, Oliver Biggers,
Mike Heitmann, Mac Hooten and Mike Hazel. The Fish
team finished at 7-5 for the season and Metcalf will wel
come the addition of these boys at the start of next year’s
season.
Hats off to Coaches Metcalf and Culpepper for an
enjoyable basketball season and good luck for next season.
