weekend is in store for
Aggie athletic department
th the track team playing host
the Baylor University Bears
iday afternoon and the swim-
ng squad vying against pre-
ison favorite Southern Metho-
it University Saturday.
Track Coach Charlie Thomas
pects a strong opponent in Bay-
ib Tjftbut he believes the Aggies will
re the visitors from Waco a
ict t; od battle. He is impressed by
Bears in that they have a
od overall team.
BAYLOR COACH Clyde Hart
s said he thinks his thinclads
n score in every event in the
uthwest Conference Track Meet
cept the shot put. The Bap-
its are especially strong in the
rints, the 440-yard dash, and
6 relay events.
Heading the Bears’ contingent
11 be Wayne Brandt in the
relin throw and the sprints,
ckie Allen in the sprints, Mike
iffman in the 440-yard dash and
cky Smith in the broad jump.
MS Randy Matson has a sure win in
specialty, the shot put. Geor-
Resley, the Aggies other fine
of I ot-putter who has had to live
the shadow of a world cham-
finished second to Matson
the last meet and, on the basis
this, is the favorite to take jyc-
d place against the Bears.

getters for A&M include Arie
Britt, a two-letter winner in the
sprints, sophomore miler John
Heffner, high-jumper Mike Sch-
rider, a two-year winner in the
Southwest Conference Meet, and
broad-jumper Steve O’Neal.
Set for Kyle Field, the meet
kicks off at 2:30 p.m. with the
field events, and running events
begin at 3 p.m. The public is in
vited free of charge.
The swimmers face a difficult
task — beating the nation’s sixth-
ranked team. SMU has three
Southwest Conference Swimming
Championships’ record-holders on
its present team.
SOUTH AFRICAN Vernon
Slovin swam the 200-yard but
terfly last year in Austin in a
record time of 1:56.3, while sprint
er Brian Percival topped the old
norm in the 200-yard individual
medley with a 1:59.6.
Senior Tim Birnie owns both
SWC records in the backstroke
events. Aggie swimmer Jerry
Keating termed Birnie the top
backstroker in Texas. His 100-
yard time is 54.4 seconds with the
top 200-yard time of 1:58.5. Ken
Merten, who has just transferred
to SMU, is probably the outstand
ing performer for the Methodists.
A breaststroke specialist, Merten
is one of the top ten in the nation.

DOG DAYS AT ACC TRACK
Everybody and his dog are getting into the together in workouts. Chico works out daily
act at the Abilene Christian College track with Fox, who had the second best mark in
these days. Senior hurdler Craig Fox and Texas in the intermediate hurdles last year
his Mexican Chihuahua, Chico, take a hurdle of 52.5. (AP Wirephoto)

The Unruly Crowd
By GARY SHERER
Much has been said lately about the bad crowd reac
tions at some recent Southwest Conference basketball
games.
As the veteran of one last Saturday night at Lubbock,
I feel compelled to review this phenomenon of the unruly
crowd.
The Aggies used a deliberate style to offset a fired-up
Texas Tech team which had just knocked off Texas Chris
tian and Southern Methodist.
In doing this, Aggie Coach Shelby Metcalf felt his
young team would have a better chance in the game. The
result of the game is now SWC history; the Aggies lost,
41-36, but they executed their game plan well.
At that game, there were 8,763 people. Most of the
Tech partisans just yelled a lot as most basketball crowds
do. Some of the things they yelled didn’t make sense,
but again, it was just harmless exercise of their vocal cords.
Where the unruly tag comes in is that some of that
throng of people chose to show their discontent in more
graphic ways.
An array of objects ranging from cups of ice to
pennies filled the air for most of the game. I would wager
that most of the people who let fly with these objects
could not tell you the difference between a zone defense and
a man-for-man defense.
Their knowledge of basketball goes from “five men
on a team” (because they can count), to “two baskets”
(again, because they can count), and that the team that
puts the ball through the basket the most times wins.
Of course the unruly “fan” is assisted by the score-
board in determining who has scored the most points, so
that in addition to his counting skills he has to know
how to read.
Those pillars of sportsmanship who were letting fly
with their various projectiles should have read the score-
board a little closer. Over the slot that showed the Aggies’
score was a five-letter word.
It spelled — GUEST!
