Ags Top Hog In 60-53 Victory
By GARY SHERER
“There’s no place like home,”
goes the old refrain, and the
Aggies were singing right along
as they extended their home rec
ord to 5-3 with a 60-35 victory
over the Arkansas Razorbacks
Tuesday night.
Playing before a sparse turn
out of 2,700, the Aggies came
from behind in the last five min
utes and brought their SWC rec
ord to 4-5. Arkansas is now 2-7.
It was the foul shots of John
Underwood and Ronnie Peret
that were most instrumental in
the Aggie comeback victory. Aft
er Terry Trippet had brought the
Maroon and White back to with
in one point (48-49) with a jump
shot, Peret sank four straight
foul shots to put the Aggies
ahead 52-49.
Underwood followed up a Hog
basket with two free tosses to
put the Aggies up by three again.
The 6-3 junior from Honey Grove,
who has been a clutch performer
all year, then followed up an
other Arkansas bucket with two
more charity throws and the
game was decided with the clock
showing 22 seconds left.
This apparently wasn’t enough
for Billy Bob Barnett, as he was
JOHN UNDERWOOD
also fouled by the same man that
had fouled Underwood each time
(Wally Freeman) and Barnett
sank his two free throws.
Barnett still wasn’t through.
Arkansas brought the ball down
hurriedly and a frantic pass was
picked off by Trippet. The Odes
sa junior tossed the ball to Bar
nett and the Brenham Bomber
stuffed the ball through the bas
ket to complete the scoring for
the night.
It is ironic to note that Ar
kansas’ Freeman, while forced to
wear the goat horns tonight, was
the man who beat the Aggies at
Little Rock in the two teams'
first meeting this year.
Regardless of goats horns, the
Aggies weren’t to be denied this
night as they matched the Razor-
backs basket for basket in a hot-
shooting first half and took a
halftime lead of 31-30.
The Maroon and White contin
ued their 50-percent-plus shoot
ing which they had shown in
Houston over the weekend, as
they hit on 12 of 23 from the
field for 52.2.
But, that second half letdown,
a menace in recent games, struck
them again and Arkansas got the
lead with seven minutes gone into
the final 20.
Sonny Benefield led the Aggies
in the first half with 13 points,
with six pretty jump shots and
one free throw. The Sweeny
Swisher cooled off in the second
half as the second-period jinx got
to him.
While the second half was cool,
shooting-wise, the crowd in G.
Rollie White Coliseum was hot.
There were some questionable
foul calls made in that final
twenty minutes and most of them
didn’t make the Aggie partisans
too happy. At one point, many
of the fans were trying to re
member the words to the song,
“The Arkansas Traveler,” as they
tried to assist the officials in
their job.
Coach Shelby Metcalf had a big
smile on his face following the
game as it was evident he was
pleased with his young team and
its come-from-behind win.
The Aggies now 5-14 on the
year, were led by Benefield and
Peret with 14 apiece and Barnett
added 13. Arkansas’ high point
men were Benton Cone and Tom
my Rowland with 14 each.
Saturday night the Aggies will
be in Lubbock for their second
meeting with the Texas Tech Red
Raiders. Last week the Aggies
topped Tech at College Station in
a 79-67 thriller.
TWO FOR BARNETT
