No ‘Happily Ever After 9
In Aggie Players Drama
A&M Oceanographers Study
Effects Of Hurricane Inez
Entertainment-seekers looking
for a play with a “happily ever
after” ending shouldn’t see
“Which Death To Die?”, a local
ly written and Aggie Players-
produced stark portrayal of the
senselessness of war.

AGRICULTURE STUDENTS HONORED
Tommy L. Gosdin of Glen Rose, left, senior agricultural
engineering major, receives a $300 Borden Company Foun
dation Scholarship for the highest academic ranking in the
College of Agriculture. Dr. R. E. Patterson, dean of the
college, makes the presentation. The other students from
the left are Leslie Ethetton of Dublin, range science sen
ior, and William Haseloff of Vernon, agricultural economics
senior. Ethetton received $180 from the J. C. Porter Me
morial Scholarship, and Haseloff $180 from the Wichita
Farm and Ranch Club Scholarship in recognition of aca
demic standing. Porter was an Aggie-Ex and a Wichita
Falls bank official.
The Players’ first major pro
duction of 1966-67 misses a cheer
ful ending by seconds.
The stronger-minded can see
the Robert Stewart Jr.-authored
treatise of war and heroism
Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. in
Guion Hall.
Modem technology makes the
plot plausible: the fact that steel
can be sealed against steel tight
ly enough to trap air.
Strong-arm type Armstrong
and the parasitic Shrimp are
most forcefully portrayed, pos
sibly because their character is
delineated earliest. Their clear-
cut characterizations provide
comic relief and dominate the
play. Meanwhile Roberts’ is the
coolest head in the unnamed bat
tleship’s innards.
Roger Williams dramatically
projects the bullyish Armstrong,
causing Paul Stewart’s rendition
of Roberts to suffer by compari-
Virtually the entire play about
five men is set in a bubble of air
trapped in a sunken battleship 25
years ago today.
Tishler Wins Honor Award
From State PE Association
FROM THERE, the Players
under C. K. Esten’s sponsorship
and Bob Wenck’s directorship un
ravel a fast-moving revelation of
how men die. The play support
ed by superb sets, vital sound of
electronic origin and remarkable
lighting affects by Cynthia Smith
centers on Schwartz, played by
Paul Bleau; Roberts by Paul
Stewart, Armstrong by Roger
Williams, Shrimp by Mike Leid-
er and Lt. Southall by Larry
Baugh.
Carl E. Tishler, Texas A&M
Health and Physical Education
Department head, is winner of the
State Honor Award for 1966 from
the Texas Association for Health,
Physical Education and Recrea
tion.
Tishler received the organiza
tion’s highest award at the annual
convention of the Texas Associa
tion for Health, Physical Educa
tion and Recreation in Dallas.
Dr. Carl W. Landiss, A&M
health and physical education pro
fessor, presented the citation to
Tishler for outstanding contri
butions to the organization and
the field. Landiss was chairman
of the award committee.
Tishler, head of the department
since 1947, joined the A&M fa
culty in 1941, moving from West
ern Reserve University where he
earned a master of arts degree
in health and physical education.
He also has a bachelor of sci
ence degree from Ohio State Uni
versity.
State association president in
1951, Tishler has served as sec
tion chairman at national and
state conventions and as consult
ant to professional and lay groups
in health and physical education.
He has worked with evaluation
teams surveying physical and
health services in public schools.
Under Tishler’s leadership as
Health and Physical Education
Department head, physical facilit
ies have been expanded and grad
uate programs have been added
at Texas A&M.
How each responds to being
trapped without hope of rescue
beneath the surface of Pearl Har
bor is graphically drawn by Stew
art, embarking on his first full-
length effort, and given excep
tional credence by the Players.
Stewart’s five trapped sailors
show unusual aplomb in spite of
the situation and don’t begin to
react in the manner one would
suspect until late stages of the
hour and 45 minute presentation.
SCHWARTZ is taken by a son
he never saw; Shrimp by a
“mother” who didn’t offer securi
ty he needed; Southall finding a
self only Roberts suspected and
Armstrong by a broken heart he
never knew he had. How Rob
erts gets it is an ill-timed occur-

SEVEN OF THE other nine
characters in “Which Death to
Die?” enter the action by flash
back, a technique handled well by
behind-the-scenes personnel. The
Players’ props and equipment
rack is given a good workout by
the Congressman Olin E. Teague-
endorsed play.
Appearance of would-be res
cuers is possible through a dou
ble-level scenic arrangement de
signed by Harry Gooding and
constructed by Dickenson Gus
tafson and his aides.
The various scenes are brought
into prominence by use of spots,
a technique first employed by the
Aggie thespian group in last
year’s “Death of a Salesman.”
Bryan and College Station now
has a pro writer in Stewart,
whose ideas have been standard
fare for A&M’s “Fallout Theater”
and Hollywood’s TV series, “Gun-
smoke.”
Roberts sums “Which Death
To Die?” most appropriately with
his line: “There’s no right way
to die; there is just a way to
die.”
A followup Texas A&M ocean
ographic research cruise to deter
mine after-effects of Hurricane
Inez on Western Gulf of Mexico
waters is underway aboard the
specially-leased “Geronimo.”
The Geronimo is a Bureau of
Commercial Fisheries ship based
at Galveston, where A&M’s
oceanography research vessel
Alaminos ports.
The eight-day Geronimo cruise
follows a route toward Vera Cruz,
parallel to the western gulf coast.
Dr. Guy A. Franceschini,
meteorology professor, said the
cruise is to determine persisting
efects of Hurricane Inez. An
October cruise of the Alaminos
crossed the track of the storm
that expired on the Central Amer
ica peninsula.
“Our scientists will check
changes caused by Inez, measur
ing water temperature structure
and primary productivity,” Dr.
Franceschini explained. “We
want to know what a hurricam
does to the environment.”
The expedition is a joint n.
search project of Drs. Frances,
chini and Sayed Z. El-Sayed fe
determine physical and biologii
aspects of air-sea interaction.
The cruise carries an ll-mi
scientific complement incl
representatives from oceano
phy, biology and wildlife scieij
departments, the associate pi
fessor said. Chief scientist
John Grady of the Commercij
Fisheries Bureau. Jimmy Caj
is in charge of meteorolojj
equipment, including an infrarej
thermometer for measuring sin
face temperature without touch
ing the water.
Dr. Franceschini said the de.
vice is like thermometers used®
weather satellites.
The Bureau of Commerdia!
Fisheries will make other
vations on the return trip.
