Greer, announced A&M Engineer- Big Thank-You Board Displayed For Footballers Texas A&M students are pre paring a mammoth “thank you” for the 1966 football team. “Thank you notes” 10 feet tall and four feet wide will be pre sented the team when rulled-off spaces for 4,500 signatures are filled, explained Bill Faulkner of Bryan, Alpha Phi Omega presi dent. “Anyone may sign the boards,” he said. “We can turn them over and sign the other side too, if necessary.” The large “thank you” cards are displayed near the post office in the Memorial Stu dent Center, alongside a football team photo display. Benson, general program chairman. Benson said the dedication is in recognition of Greer’s 40 years of Texas Highway Department service, the past 26 as its top administrative official. Greer will be honored at the opening session with personal tributes by top representatives from public and private groups connected with state and national highway programs. The three-day program will be conducted under the direction of A&M’s Texas Transportation In stitute and will include six dif ferent conferences running simul taneously. Conference topics are highway design and traffic operation, man agement, right-of-way, structure and hydraulics, pavement and construction and maintenance. Donald R. Drew, TTI associate research engineer, will be co ordinator for the conference on highway design and traffic oper ation. This will include a work shop on design and operation from the standpoint of safety and sessions on the role of. automa tion in highway operation and new concepts of design and op eration of controlled-access high ways. The management conference, coordinated by TTI Associate Ex ecutive Officer C. V. Wootan, will consist of sessions on develop ment of sueprvisory training pro grams, human relations, imple mentation-financial management and utilization of manpower, technology and experience. William G. Adkins, TTI re search economist, will coordinate the right-of-way conference. This will include a panel discussion of right-of-way problems and re ports on federal inspections and new federal regulations for utility adjustments. The conference on structure and hydraulics will be highlighted by panel discussions on problems with bridge construction, pre stressed concrete beams and pil ings. Conference coordinator is Teddy J. Hirsch, head of TTI’s Structural Research Department. The pavement and construction operations conference will be jointly coordinated by Bob M. Gallaway, head of TTI’s Highway Materials Department, and Frank H. Scrivner, head of the Pave ment Design Department. Includ ed in this conference will be a panel discussion on design, con struction and service experience of pavements and reports on skip resistant pavements, recent find ings in flexible base research and system for synthetic aggregates. Sessions in clude a report on equipment prob lems and a panel discussion on modification and maintenance of signs. alhoun Is Named Recipient Of Mineral Industry Award n Dr. John C. Calhoun Jr., Texas l&M University vice president pr programs, has been named ■fecipient of the 1967 Mineral ndustry Education Award of the merican Institute of Mining, etallurgical and Petroleum En- ineers. He was officially notified by he 1966 Mineral Industry Edu- :ation Award Committee. The station reads: “Eminent petroleum engineer, :ducator, author and administra- ior whose unusual insight and irive sparked a revolution in etroleum engineering education Jhrough the application of science 8nd continuation study.” A plaque will be presented at the dinner of the AIME Council j) of Education next Feb. 19 in the Biltmore Hotel at Los Angeles. Dr. Calhoun also will be an honored guest at the head table at the national AIME Annual Banquet February 22 in Los Angeles. A page devoted to his accomplishments will be included in the Institute’s Honor Booklet to be distributed at the banquet. Dr. Calhoun came to Texas A&M from Pennsylvania State Universtiy, where he had been head of the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas, to become Dean of Engineering, Director of the Texas Engineer ing Experiment Station and of the Texas Engineering Extension Service in 1955. He was named vice president for engineering in 1957 and vice chancellor for engineering in 1959. In 1960, he was named vice chancellor for development. From 1963-65, Dr. Calhoun was on leave from Texas A&M to serve as Assistant and Science Adviser to Secretary of the In terior Stewart Udall, during which time he traveled over many parts of the world. He also served during that time as acting director of the Office of Water Resources Research of the De partment of Interior. Dr. Calhoun returned to A&M in 1965 as vice prsident for pro grams. He has published 79 tech nical and general articles and a book of reservoir engineering. He is a member of several profes sional and honorary societies. WHATABURGER 1101 S.
