Ag Dominicans Add Culture
By MIKE PLAKE
Care to dance a Merengue?
This is just one of many dances
and tunes that the members of
A&M’s new Dominican Republic
Club have shown to local schools
since their organization October
12.
The club is the first of any of
the Latin American countries to
form an individual organization
for their own country. Since there
are about 50 Dominican Republic
students on the campus, the Pan
American Student Organization,
which represented all the Latin
American countries, was getting
overcrowded. This led to the
organization of the Dominican
Republic students.
CLUB PRESIDENT Rafael
Vargas said the group had two
special projects in the planning
stage: They are raising a fund
for the people in their country
whose homes were destroyed dur
ing the recent hurricanes.
In addition, the club will pre
sent a program in the Memorial
Student Center showing the life
and customs of the modern
Dominican Republic.
The organization hopes to par
ticipate later as a group in intra
mural competition. Vargas said
the main purpose of the club now
is to orient the different Domini
can students on the campus, and
to provide unity and organization
that can be useful to their coun
try when they return.
OTHER OFFICERS in the
club are Alejandro Fondeur, vice
president; Rafael Ledesma, secre
tary; and Leo Flores, treasurer.
