THE BATTALION Thursday, December 1, 1966 College Station, Texas Page 7 Moorman, Housley All-SWC By GARY SHERER Recently - named All - America tackle Maurice “Mo” Moorman has another accolade to add to his already long list. He and Aggie teammate Wen dell Housley were named to the All-Southwest Conference offen sive team for 1966. The team shows a definite youth movement as four sophomores and six jun iors were named to the offensive and defensive units. It was the most sophomores ever named to the all-star unit. Along with Housley, other soph omores were: Jerry Levias of SMU; Chris Gilbert and Corby Robertson of Texas. Conference winner SMU placed seven on both teams, while sec ond place Arkansas had five. Texas, tied with the Razorbacks for second position in the con ference, listed three players, while A&M and TCU placed two each on the squads. Baylor, Rice and Texas Tech had one each to give every team in the confer ence a representative. The all-conference team: Offensive — Ends, Larry Gil bert, Texas Tech; and Levias; tackles, Moorman and Dick Cun ningham, Arkansas, George Gaiser, SMU; guards, Lynn Thornhill, SMU, Howard Goard, Texas; center, Melvin Gibbs, Ar kansas; quarterback, Mac White, SMU; halfbacks, Housley and Gilbert; and fullback, Lester Lehman, Rice. Defensive — Ends, Robertson and Hartford Hamilton, Arkan sas; tackles, Loyd Phillips, Ar kansas, Mike Bratcher, TCU; guards, Greg Pipes, Baylor; John LaGrone, SMU; lineback ers, Billy Bob Stewart and Jerry Griffin, both of SMU; defensive halfbacks, Frank Horak, TCU, M a r t i n e Bercher, Arkansas; safety, Chuck Latourette, Rice. With so many under-classmen making the team, the 1967 sea son promises to be filled with some great action. Rice Names New Head Coach HOUSTON, Tex. UP)—Harold Bo Hagan, backfield specialist who helped develop such pro quarterbacks as Frank Ryan and King Hill, Wednesday was named head football coach of Rice Uni versity. Hagan has been an assistant for the past 11 years to Jess Neely, who announced six months ago that the 1966 season would be his 27th and last as head coach at the Southwest Confer ence school. Neely also is to retire next Sept. 1 as athletic director. Hagan’s selection was an nounced at a news conference after a meeting of the univer sity trustees. A native of Savannah, Ga., Hagan was a quarterback at South Carolina and served as freshman coach at Georgia Tech and as an assistant at Southern Methodist prior to joining the Rice coaching staff under Neely in 1956. The first two quarterbacks Hagan worked with at Rice were Ryan, now with the Cleveland Browns, and Hill, now with the Philadelphia Eagles. Hill and Ryan frequently alternated in directing the Rice offense but Hill normally drew the starting assignment. The search for the first new head coach at Rice in 27 years began six months ago when Nee ly, who will be 69 in January, announced his retirement plans.
