Aggieland Recreation Center Redmond Terrace Center keeping pace with the Aggie game on the radio. He was entitled to two big sighs of relief when his team and the Aggies came out victori ous. Ward is one of 22 Aggies who have found challenging and re warding duties at the Academy while attending A&M. He is an assistant football coach and counselor while the other Aggies are counselors only. Their duties are much like the “dorm daddies” at A&M, with each counselor having 20 to 32 students under their supervision. They advise students living in a military atmosphere, some what like the Corps of Cadets at A&M. But their duties have much more depth than just “dorm dad dies.” At Allen there are stu dents in grades seven through college sophomore. Many of the young cadets in the lower grades are away from home for the first time, and many problems of dorm life and self-sufficiency must be overcome. “Often we must be a big brother, a father, a mother, a minister, a tutor or a policeman in dealing with the adjustment problems these youngsters have,” Ward said. Ward, a 6’3”, 225-pound former football player at A&M has little trouble in handling most of his disciplinary problems himself. “My year as cadet major in the Corps and commander of Company C-l definitely gave me a headstart in handling these youngsters,” said Ward. All but three of the counselors are veterinary medicine students. All counselors are of junior or senior standing at A&M. They are compensated with a nominal salary plus comfortable living quarters and meals. “The best compensation is the valuable experience of working with these youngsters,” Ward said. “You can’t put a price on that.” AGGIE COACHES TEAM Bill Wade, senior industrial technology major, shouts en- courag-ement to his team from his sidelines.
