A voluntary reading program
by Texas A&M’s Counseling and
Testing Center is designed to
keep students “off the dean’s
team”.
Counselor Ulrich W. Crow,
director of the program, explain
ed that better reading ability and
comprehension may help keep
students in school who might
otherwise fail to make passing
grades.
“We really can’t tell about re
sults yet,” Crow commented, “but
we are optimistic. We are willing
to try anything that will help
students.”
The program was instituted
during the last week of October
on the recommendation of A&M
President Earl Rudder, who had
been impressed with it during a
visit to a school in the East.
AUSTON S. KERLEY, Coun
seling and Testing Center direc
tor, agreed the program was
feasible and ordered electric read
ing accelerator machines and re
lated materials.

Kerley remarked. “The program
needs time to develop to its po
tential. You don't just open the
doors of a new program and have
people crowd in to try it.”
Fifty-two of the reading ac
celerators have been distributed
to dormitory masters in civilian
areas and to scholastic officers in
Corps dorms. Counseling offi
cials hope to place several ma
chines in Cushing Library when
new facilities are completed, thus
giving day students and married
students access to the reading
aid.
CROW NOTED that the uro
gram is primarily for first year
students although upperclassmen
are equally welcome to partici
pate.
“The accelerator is really a
pacing machine,” Crow pointed
out. “We test students with a
series of 1,350-word stories in
which vocabulary does not play
an important part. This estab
lishes a reading rate.
“Then,” he continued, “the stu
dent takes a brief comprehension
test on two stories. If he scores
70 per cent or higher comprehen
sion , we suggest that he increase
his reading speed by 10 to 15 per
cent.”
“AS THE STUDENT practices,
we urge him to again increase his
reading speed,” Crow explained.
“The accelerator has a dial for
setting a simulated underliner at
various speeds. And we have a
simple “reading ease” calculator
which aids in determining the
difficulty of material in text
books. They check the length of
sentences and the number of syl
lables against a chart to- decide
the accelerator speed.
The Counseling and Testing
staff recommends that students
practice in 30 to 45-minute ses
sions three or four times a week,
thus building their reading speed
and comprehension gradually.
A graduate assistant, Eddie
Carpenter, keeps records on test
results, but students are being
urged to keep individual records
as well.
“We feel,” Crow remarked, “if
students can see in black and
white statistics that they are im
proving, they will be encouraged
and try even harder.”

SPRITE! It fizzes! It roars! It bubbles with

Heads turn. Whisperings. "Who's that strangely
