College (Highway 6, N) at 19th Freetvay Study Showing Results Reduced travel time, better lane utilization, and fewer rear end collisions at entrance ramps are resulting from research along a six-mile stretch of the inbound Gulf Freeway in Hous ton, by Texas A&M researchers. The research, which involves application of surveillance and control technology for freeways in g'eneral, is being conducted by TTI’s Department of Highway Design and Traffic Engineering on a project sponsored by the Texas Highway Department in cooperation with the U. S. Bu reau of Public Roads. A number of accomplishments have result ed under TTI traffic engineers. TRAVEL TIME OVER the six- mile study area at the height of congestion during the morning peak has been reduced from an average time of 17 minutes to an average of 11 minutes. < In addition the smoothness of the trip, as measured by an index called “acceleration noise,” has been doubled. Freeway volumes during the peak period are on the average about 10 percent higher along the entire facility. This repre sents an increased utilization of the freeway lanes. The hundreds of extra vehicles accommodated on the freeway as a result of this increased efficiency would other wise be forced to travel on al ready overloaded parallel streets under conditions of severe con gestion. Bottlenecks are sighted through television surveillance and cleared by divirgence of traf fic in automatic signal control ahead of them. THE MOST COMMON type of freeway accident — that of the rear end collision at entrance ramps due to false starts during the merging maneuver—has vir tually been eliminated through ramp control. Since cars are re leased by signals one at a time, there is only one ramp vehicle in the merging area at a time. Further research on the proj- ENGINEERS LET'S TALK Our plant facilities and product output are constantly expanding- to meet growing demands for gasoline, motor oil, LP-gas and agricultural chemicals. These will involve innovations for improvement of freeway operation which will be accomplished automatically. Ten sion and human error associated with merging from an entrance ramp onto the freeway will be eliminated more or less by auto matically fitting ramp traffic in to gaps in freeway traffic. Spe cially designated control plans will go into effect when a free way stoppage is detected. A computer will analyze the de mand requirements at several entrance points and decide, on the basis of optimizing operation according to appropriate criteria, just what patterns should be favored.
