Engineering Fraternity Pledges 6 THE BATTALION
Friday, October 28, 1966
College Station, Texas
Page 3
Alpha Pi Mu, the Industrial
Engineering fraternity, took six
pledges into its local chapter this
week.
The new pledges include two
undergraduates and four gradu
ates students. Bob Dillard and
Jose Macias are the undergrad
uates, and graduates include
Hank Lewis, Bill Kirk, Orlando
Madrigal, and Dileep Sule.
Something new in Alpha Pi
Mu’s pledge requirements is the
construction of a project by the
pledges. This year, the pledges
are required to construct a phy
sical representation device for
demonstrating planning. This de
vice is used to simplify complex
planning.
Alpha Pi Mu was organized in
1958. President is Mike Barnes.

Bridge City elementary school
Sunday.
The E. E. Sims Elementary
School will be dedicated at 2:30
p.m. The new Bridge City struc
ture is named for Dr. E. E. Sims,
superintendent of the Bridge
City Independent School District
since 1962.
“The new elementary school is
a monument to Bridge City peo
ple who support good education
for their children.” Dr. Hensar-
ling said.
“Naming the school for Dr.
Sims indicates they are willing
to support the programs and ad
ministration,” the Education and
Psychology Department head
added.
Bridge City citizens voted two
facility improvement bond issues
in the last four years. The dis
trict doubled its facilities in the
same period, has another bond
issue before the public, enrolled
2,700 students this fall — com
pared to 1,000 eight years ago—
and is gaining state-wide recog
nition for its multi-level, weight
ed grades program.
Texas A&M University has
been awarded a $60,784 grant
under the National Defense Edu
cation Act for a 1967 Summer
Institute in English.
The eight-week seminar begins
June 5 and ends July 28, noted
Institute Director J. S. Jernigan,
assistant professor of English.
Participants include 40 English
teachers with a minimum of
three years’ teaching experience
in grades 7 through 12.
Jernigan said literature and
language will be taught, with
participants to receive six hours
credit toward advanced degrees.
In the past two institutes, nine
hours credits could be earned.
Jernigan said the number of
hours will be reduced to relieve
pressure on students.
The English Institutes began
at A&M in 1965 under a $54,803
grant. A&M received $61,011
last summer.
“Composition will be taught as
a coordinating course for lan
guage and literature,” Jernigan
explained. “About one third of
the time will be spent in discus
sion and practical application of
new methods for presenting sub
ject matter.”
The institute staff includes Dr.
Harrison E. Hierth in language,
Dr. Carroll D. Laverty in litera
ture, and Dr. Harry P. Kroitor
in composition. Tom R. McElroy
of Bellaire High School, Hous
ton, will supervise the institute
workshop.
Dr. Lee J. Martin, A&M Eng
lish Department head, will serve
as a consultant.
Three guest lecturers are to be
named.
