Arkansas brings the Southwest Conference’s top season record, 5- 1, to Kyle Field for the 7:30 p.m. fracas which is expected to at tract an overflow crowd. But the Razorbacks are envious of the 3- 2-1 record of the Aggies. Actually, the Porkers are envi ous of only the first numeral, 3. That’s the number of SWC vic tories the Farmers have chalked up against no setbacks. Arkan sas suffered a 7-0 whitewashing at the hands of Baylor. A&M shocked Baylor’s Bruins with a 17-13 upset verdict last weekend. The bruising battle with Bay lor left the Cadets with a rash of injuries. Six Aggies who have started at one time or another this season are either doubtful or definitely out for Saturday’s duel. The wounded include line men Gary Kovar, Jim Singleton, Larry Thornburg and Jack Py- burn, and backs Loyd Curington and Bill Sallee. Kovar returned to action Wed nesday as Coach Gene Stallings sent the Aggies through a short, full three-quarter speed workout without pads. Kovar, senior offensive guard who was moved to center after Jim Singleton injured a knee in the Louisiana State game, re ceived a hip pointer in the Baylor game last week. He has shown rapid recovery and Stallings said there was a chance that he would be able to play against Arkansas. Stallings limited the drill to an hour and ten minutes. “Our players are tired, sore and beat up and they need some rest,” he said. There is some irony surround ing the upcoming scuffle. Last year, the Aggies lost back-to- back 31-0 games to Baylor and Arkansas. They avenged the mauling by the Bears, but whether they can pull off a simi lar coup against Arkansas’ finest remains to be determined in the arena. CIRCLE TONIGHT 6:30 P. The passing arm of Quarter back Edd Hargett, back-of-the- week choice of United Press In ternational, could control the out come of the game. Hargett is the conference leader in both passing and total offense. He has hurled eight scoring strikes while completing 83 of 155 throws for 1,044 yards. Add the 11 net yards he has gained rushing for a 1,055 yard total offense figure. It was Hargett who riddled Baylor with a touchdown pass, a scoring burst into the line, and the field position which set up the Aggies’ field goal. The Linden ace will be opposed in the air and on the ground by Hog Quarterback Jon Brittenum, the loop’s fourth-ranked passer who is fifth in total offense. Brittenum has hit on 46 of 89 passes for 663 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s totaled 741 yards overall, and is the leader in yards per play at 5.8, com pared with 5.3 for Hargett. Soccer Club Goes Against Trinity Texas A&M’s Soccer Club has a return match with Trinity Nov. 5 in San Antonio after posting a 3-1 home field victory Saturday. Defensive ace Elik Belaglowsky of Mexico shifted to forward in the second half and booted two goals to spur A&M to the triumph. Trinity led 1-0 at half time via a 20-yard penalty kick. Forward “Garzita” Garza of Mexico kicked A&M’s other goal. Porfirio Perez of Nicaragua coaches the A&M team. Ramiro Rodriguez of Costa Rica is as sistant coach. Brittenum has seen only three of his passes picked off by the opposition. Hargett has suffered seven interceptions. A&M is tops in interceptions, with three men in the first five listings. Curley Hallman has snitched four, as have Tuffy Fletcher and Lawson Howard. The Hogs’ Stu Berryhill stole a Wichita pass last Saturday and returned it 90 yards for a touch down, good for a tie for longest interception return in the confer ence. Arkansas boasts the league’s number one punt returner in fleet Martine Bercher. He’s logged 230 yards on 17 returns, including the SWC’s longest, a 64-yarder against Tulsa. In the line, a massive battle is shaping up between A&M’s Mau rice “Mo” Moorman and Arkan sas’ Loyd Phillips. Moorman is regarded by Aggie Coach Gene Stallings as the finest tackle he has seen. And the sports writers are booming Phillips for All- America honors. The intangible that could make the difference does not go into the record books. Stallings says big plays have made the differ ence between winning and losing this year. The Aggies have been able to come up with several in every win. Arkansas is anxious to wipe away the Baylor loss and regain a strong foothold in the flag chase. The Aggies are just as deter mined to shoot down the Porkers and roll on toward the conference championship. With the pressure building up, the fans should be winners Sat urday. The A&M-Baylor clash produced seven heart cases. This encounter should be even more exciting. Thursday, October 27, 1966 College Station, Texas Page 7 HE'S ON THE WA Y!
