Fish Wallop Baylor
By GARY SHERER
Battalion Sports Staff
WACO — The Aggie Fish, per
haps inspired by recent varsity
performances, put on an impres
sive offensive show here Thurs
day night.
A tremendous improvement
over their last game, the Fish
built up a 27-6 edge in the first
half and coasted in the second
half, for a 34-26 victory.
Led by the pass combination
of Barney Harris to Jimmie
Adams, the Fish beat the Cubs at
their own game —• passing — in
the first half. Concentrating on
their running game in the second
half, the Frosh gained a very
respectable 331 yards total of
fense for the game.
In their first game, with the
TCU Wogs, the main problem
seemed to be the pass defense.
After this game, it doesn’t look
like a problem anymore. The
Fish picked off four errant Cub
passes, Larry Stegent personally
grabbing three himself.
If this wasn’t enough humilia
tion for the Cubs, they also fum
bled five times with the Fish re
covering each time. Three of the
fumble recoveries led directly to
touchdowns.
After stalling several times,
the Fish tallied their first score.
It was set up by James Selvidge

sive secondary and a big line the
Bears have the toughest defense
the Aggies have faced this sea
son. Seven of Baylor’s defenders
were starters last year.
The Bears rate second only to
Arkansas on defensive charts.
Baylor has held opponents to an
average of 269 yards total of
fense in four games while aver
aging 302.
Just looking at the statistics,
the Aggies don’t stand too well in
this department. A&M has al
lowed its opponents 323 yards
and only averaged 291 for its own
offense, but the Aggies have
made steady improvement in
their first five games.
THE AGGIES lost their first
two games to Tulane and Georgia
Tech before starting the climb.
Then the Maroon and White
bopped Texas Tech and tied a
strong LSU team. Last week
A&M powdered highly-rated
TCU. This week the Aggies will
be trying to go just a little higher
and halt its losing streak with
the Bears.
The game will be the 63rd
meeting between the Aggies and
the Bears and the second for
Stallings and Baylor Coach John
Bridgers. A&M holds the lead
in the game series with 35 wins
to 20 for Baylor with seven ties,
but Bridgers has the lead with
the coaches.
STALLINGS WILL start the
same defense he used last week
against TCU with Tuffy Fletcher
and Grady Allen at ends; Rolf
Krueger and Harvey Aschenbeck
at the tackles; Ken Lamkin at
middle guard; Bill Hobbs and
Robert Cortez at linebackers; Joe
Wood at rover; Lawson Howard
and Dan Westerfield at halfbacks
and Curley Hallman at defensive
safety.
The offense is subject to change
before game time. Starters will
probably be split end Tommy
Maxwell, weak tackle Ed B reding,
weak guard Don Koehn, center
Gary Kovar, strong guard Jack
Pybum, strong tackle Mo Moor
man, strong end Tommy Buck-
man, quarterback Edd Hargett,
weak back Bob Long, strong back
Wendell Housley and fullback
Ronnie Lindsey.
The game should be a passing
duel between Hargett and South-
all as the Aggies make their bid
to upset the entire conference
race and retain the SWC lead.

WALLACE MIDDENDORP SAT HERE
What did you do
when Joe (Boxcar)

kicked off the
football team just
because he flunked
six out of four of
his majors? What
did you do, Wallace
Middendorp?
And when the
school newspaper's
editors resigned in
protest because The Chancellor wouldn't allow the
publication of certain salacious portions of
"Night In a Girl's Dormitory"
you just sat, didn't you?
You've made a mockery of your
life, Wallace Middendorp!
You're a vegetable.
Protest, Wallace Middendorp.
Take a stand. Make a noise!
Or drink Sprite, the noisy soft

Open a bottle of Sprite at

it fizz and bubble to the

Let its lusty carbonation
echo through the halls of ivy.
Let its tart, tingling

Do these things, Wallace

Fish ground-gainer with 87 yards
in 21 carries, moved the final one
yard for the score. The kick
was blocked and the score stood
13-0.
About two minutes into the
second quarter, the Cubs scored
their first touchdown. It was set
up by a 50-yard punt return by
the Cubs Gordon Utgard. Two
plays later, the Cubs’ Joe Reed
went over right guard for twelve
yards and the score. The kick
failed and the score was 13-6.
The rest of the half was domi
nated by the Fish. They scored
two more touchdowns before the
intermission. A Harris pass to
Brian Christen after a 73-yard
drive accounting for the score.
The other came after Winston
Beam recovered a fumble on the
Cub 27. Bruce Kemph took the
ball in seven plays later.
After the intermission, the
Cubs scored quickly. An 83-yard
drive capped by a 20-yard run
by Charles Robins, made it, with
the kick good, Fish 27, Cubs 13.
The two teams then took turns
stopping each other for the rest
of the third quarter.
Then, a minute gone in the
fourth quarter, Brupbacher scored
from the four, on a touchdown
following another Cub fumble.
This time the ball was covered by
Robert Kirchner on the Cubs’
seven. The kick was good and
the Frosh led, 34-13.
The Cubs completed the scoring
with an 89-yard drive with five
minutes left.
