Stal- During the past two seasons a lot of ball carriers have felt the impact of Cortez’ bonnet. He won a starting position as a sophomore last year and has es tablished himself among the small group of veterans on the Aggie defensive unit this season. CORTEZ WILL be 22 years old next Sunday, the day after the Aggies tangle with the Baylor Bears in Waco. He’s hopeful it will be a happy one but it’ll take a victory over the tough Bruins to make it so. One couldn’t fault his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Caspar Cortez of San Benito if they accidentally forgot Robert’s birthday anniver sary. They have a lot of them to remember since Robert is one of 13 children. He’s fourth from the youngest. ROBERT ISN’T very surprised at the Aggies' fine showing the past three games. “I told my friends last summer that I thought we had a good chance in the conference. I told them we had a good quarterback and good receivers and I told them I thought we were gonna do some thing in the conference.” Until the 35-7 win over TCU last Saturday night, Cortez had been disappointed in his play this year. “My best game ever for the Aggies was in the very first one as a sophomore against LSU. I think I played pretty good against TCU last Saturday night but I hadn’t done anything worth mentioning before that. I was just kinda out there.” WHAT CORTEZ didn’t say, though, was that he had been handicapped this year by an in jured ankle. “You can’t play well if you can’t practice at full speed. You learn and you im prove by practicing.” Back at San Benito High, Cor tez was a two-way player for three seasons. He was a half back .his sophomore and junior years and a fullback his senior season. He played linebacker all three years. Too, he was quite a scorer. In his junior year against Weslaco he scored 28 points. He made four touchdowns and kicked four extra points. GIVEN HIS CHOICE he’d take defense. “I don’t mind getting hit when I run with the football but I’d rather play defense.” * / . ROBERT CORTEZ A&M’s Junior Defensive Linebacker. BY GARY SHERER Battalion Sports Staff “Athletes are a force for good,” said Mike Mistovich, owner and general manager of Bryan Radio Station KORA, last night at the special meeting of the Texas A&M Huddle of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in A&M’s All-Faiths Chapel. The main speaker centered his talk to the 150 present on the good of athletes. Members of the Texas A&M coaching staff, A&M Huddle members and coaches and athletes from high schools in the surrounding area attended the meeting. Mistovich stressed the need for all young athletes to form FCA chapters in their own schools. He pointed out that the chapters would help the athletes gain sat isfaction for themselves and at tain a new way of life. A&M Head Football Coach Gene Stallings also spoke briefly to the gathering of athletes. Stal lings completely supports the FCA. He said he feels the Hud dles bring coaches and players to a new realm of understanding. Barney Welch, who helped get the Aggie Huddle started last January, gave a brief outline of how area high schools could start chapters of their own. Aggie Huddle President Ken Lamkin introduced the officers of the Huddle which include: Jack Pybum and Jerry Camp bell, vice-presidents; Dan Wes- terfield, secretary and Joe Weiss, treasurer. Lamkin and the officers men tioned the nationwide participa tion of athletes of all sports and their continued contributions to their immediate communities. “The main purpose of this meeting tonight is to bring to the attention of local high school athletes the FCA and to encour age them to start huddles of their own,” Lamkin summed up. Lam kin expressed the desire of the A&M Huddle to work with the high school Huddles in the fu ture. 5^ h Ain Paid Quarterly on INSURED SAVINGS FIRST fIdERAI SAVINGS and LOAN ASSOCIATION 2913 Texas Ave, v\J!2& Fletcher Clarifies Intramural Policy Raymond L. Fletcher, director of Texas A&M intramural ath letics, clarified intramural policy for foul weather days. “All indoor sports will be play ed regardless of the weather,” Fletcher said. “Football and horseshoes will be played unless it is pouring down rain at game time.” Fletcher said that the intra mural office has enough officials and managers to meet its require ments for this year. “If anyone still wants to par ticipate in intfamurals he should join his dorm team participating or some other team,” added Fletcher. Questions on other in tramural policy will be answered in the intramural office in De- Ware Field House. Intramural Outlook Intramural sports are moving at a fast clip this year. Several units have taken early leads in the championship races. Class ‘A’ teams are competing in basketball, horseshoes and bowling. The Maroon Band took a quick lead in basketball with three wins without a loss. Squad ron 4, 5, and 8, Companies F-2, A-l, B-l, C-2, D-l, and E-2 are all tied in horseshoes. Class ‘A’ bowling results have not been tab ulated yet. Freshmen are playing table tennis, football and handball in Class ‘B’ intramurals. Company A-l holds the lead in ping-pong with two victories and no defeats. The G-l Fish are ahead in hand ball with two wins to no losses. Football is knotted between seven teams, Companies A-l, C-2, H-2, F-2, and Squadrons 1, 3 and 11. DEAR REB: I’m a regular Renoir on the canvas, but on campus I just don’t seem to make the scene. There was one campus cutie that used to admire my paintings, but now she’s too busy admiring some guy’s new Dodge Dart. She says riding in this guy’s Dart is like art; every time they go out, they draw a crowd. What can I do? I just have to see this girl again. It’s not that I’m in love with her, I haven’t finished her portrait yet. COLOR ME BLUE DEAR COLOR ME BLUE: Make your next sitting at your Dodge Dealer's.
