when asked about TCU’s defense
—Abe Martin, TCU’s own head
coach.
“Abe Martin says they (TCU)
played the best defensive game
last week they’ve played all year,”
replied Stallings. The Aggie
head mentor expects the Frog
crew to be even better this week.
TCU’s Frank Horak has five
interceptions to his credit in just
four games—to lead the nation
in the swiping department.
The Aggies have a few leaders,
too. Defensive halfback Curley
Hallman is second in the confer
ence with three pass intercep
tions.
Sophomore quarterback Edd
Hargett owns the best pass com
pletion record with 53 completions
in 100 attempts for a neat 53 per
cent. Harget has only had five
passes intercepted all season.
Five of Hargett’s tosses were
good for touchdowns. Hargett
aerials have accounted for 604
yards of A&M‘s total offense.
Baylor’s Terry Southall is the
only paser to gain more. He has
740 yards from passes.
Steve O’Neal ranks second with
his punting. O’Neal has booted
the pigskin 24 times this season
for a 43.2 yard average. His
longest punt, 64 yards, came in
the season opener wtih Georgia
Tech.
Stallings will stick with the
same defensive starting unit he
employed last week at LSU.
Tuffy Fletcher, 210, and Grady
Allen, 200, will be at the ends.
Rolf Krueger, 225, and Harvey
Aschenbeck, 210, will play the
tackles. Ken Lamkin, 192, will
complete the line at middle guard.
Dan Westerfield, 170, and Law-
son Howard, 185, will be A&M’s
defensive halfbacks. Bill Hobbs,
190, and Robert Cortez, 200, will
play linebackers and Joe Wood,
195, will be the rover. Curley
Hallman, 180, will be the Aggie
safety man.
Offensively, positions are not
quite as definite. Either Tommy
Maxwell or Larry Lee will be
starting at split end. Strong back
could be Wendell Housley or Bill
Sallee. Ronnie Lindsey, Dan
Schneider or Sallee could possibly
start at fullback.
Coach Stallings will be without
the services of senior center Jim
Singleton this week. Singleton
injured his left knee last week
against LSU and will be side
lined for at least three weeks.
Gary Kovar moved over to
center leaving a hole at strong
guard. It’s still a toss-up between

It has been said that the only
qualified football prognosticators
should be fortune tellers or ESP
experts. But, since most fortune
tellers do not pick football games,
it is left to the sports writers who
should know but in reality are
only guessing.
Here are Gary Sherer’s guesses
for the weekend:
Texas A&M-TCU: The Aggies
are injury-ridden but it is a
“home game” and the Frogs are
not exactly full strength either.
Look for the Aggies by four
points.
SMU-Rice: The Owls have
been surprising everybody this
year but we think SMU has had
a chance to recover from the
shock and can handle them.
From here it looks like the Mus
tangs by three.
Florida State-Texas Tech: Tech
gets out of the conference this
week after losing four in a row.
Florida State by six.
Arkansas-Texas: This will be
the first time in many years that
these two teams will be going into
this big game with losses the
week before, but it’s still a big
one. The Hogs by seven.
Jack Pyburn and Mark Weaver
for the vacant guard spot. Other
offensive starters are pretty cer
tain. Ed Breding will be at weak
tackle, Don Koehn the weak
guard, Mo Moorman at strong
tackle, Tom Buckman at strong
end, Bob Long, the weak back,
and Edd Harget will quarterback
the team.
Halfbacks Lloyd Curington and
George Walker will not see action
again this week due to injuries.
