University of Houston cross coun
try course.
In a dual meet with The Uni
versity of Houston Cougars Octo
ber 7th, the Texas A&M cross
country varsity scored 41 points
to their opponents’ 19. Only one
problem there — the team with
the lowest total points won.
The Aggie finishers of the
three mile race were: John Heff
ner, 2nd; Ed Vezy, 8th; Chris
Conley, 9th; James Thurmond,
10th; Mike Synard, 12th; Bob
Vaughn, 14th.
Howie Ryan, from the Univer
sity of Houston, won the race
with a time of 15:02. Texas
A&M sophomore John Heffner
was ranked second at 15:09. Ter
ry Sweeney, a Cougar senior,
brushed ahead of Heffner by less
than a yard, but was disqualified
because of ineligibility.
Heffner described the course
and the surprising finish of the
Aggies very readily.
“In the first place, we were not
expected to finish anywhere near
the top ten,” he said.
“We heard the University of
Houston coach, A1 Lawrence, say
this was the best cross country
team he had seen in his experi
ence, either as a runner or a
coach. Lawrence is a former
Stallings Takes
Look At Games
By BOB JONES
“I can’t say that I’m as pleased with a tie as I would have
been with a win, and I won’t say it was a moral victory to tie LSU,
but it’s been a long time since Texas A&M has done as well
against LSU,” said Aggie Head Coach Gene Stallings after Satur
day night’s 7-7 tie with Louisiana State University. But in a
way Stallings was pleased. “I’m as proud as I can be of our
youngsters because they got better as the game went along and
they were whipping LSU in the second half.”
Against Georgia Tech in the season opener and again against
Tulane, the Aggies seemed to deteriorate in the second half after
impressive first halves. Not so in the last two outings.
The Aggies came back fired up after halftime in the Texas
Tech game and built their lead to a 35-14 margin — the largest
point production by an Aggie team since 1961. Saturday the
Aggies knotted the score 7-7 in the first half against LSU, but
fell short on statistics. In the initial half LSU led in first downs,
13-2, and in rushing 162-12.
But the Maroon and White got better and the second half was
a different story.
Stallings’ crew racked up 13 first downs in that last half while
allowing LSU only four and chalked up 82 yards rushing to 38
for the Tigers.
A&M’s head mentor refused credit for the improvement while
rehashing the game at Tuesday’s news conference. He praised
the team for its fine showing. “They’re getting a little more
confidence in themselves,” commented Stallings. “It wasn’t anything
magic that the coaches did.”
Senior center Jim Singleton injured his left knee in the LSU
battle. Singleton left the game following A&M’s field goal attempt.
Stallings doesn’t expect Singleton to be ready for action in the
immediate future. “I’d say he’ll be out three weeks at a minimum.”
Singleton’s injury prompted some personnel changes for Satur
day’s game with TCU on Kyle Field. Guard Gary Kovar moved
in to fill the gap at center. Just who will fill Kovar’s position
is still a toss-up. As things stand now, either Jack Pyburn or
Mark Weaver will handle the job.
TCU’s Bruce Alford kicked two field goals last Saturday to
beat Texas Tech, 6-3. Asked how to prevent the TCU toe-man
from splitting the uprights, Stallings replied, “You better not
let them cross the 50.”
A&M won’t be making any drastic changes in its defense for
TCU. “We’re gonna use our same defenses we’ve always had,”
Stallings said. “We’re just gonna try to improve them.”
Stallings anticipates a running game from the TCU Horned
Frogs Saturday. “They keep the ball. They just run right at
you and keep the ball,” he emphasized. “They’ve also got a pass
receiver, Campbell, that’s pretty high up in the statistics, too. So
they throw the ball to him.” Sonny Campbell is presently second
in the Southwest Conference in pass receiving with 17 receptions
for 201 yards, and 11.8 yard average.

“So we felt very pleased, with
