Texas A&M Probe
Highway Problem
Of Beautification
Highway beautification is the
aim of a research project being
probed by the Texas Transporta
tion Institute at Texas A&M Uni
versity.
Dr. William G. Adkins, re
search economist for TTI’s Trans
portation Economics division, is
principal investigator for the U.
S. Bureau of Public Roads-spon-
sored survey.
The USB PR has awarded an
initial grant of $25,000 for a 15-

section 302 of the U. S. Highway
Beautification Act. Interstate
and federal aid primary roads
are included.
Research involves:
A survey of landowners who
receive rentals from signs.
Field interviews with junk
yard operators regarding the
possible effect moving or screen
ing might have on business.
A mail survey of lodging estab
lishments as to their dependence
on outdoor advertising and pos
sible adjustments to loss of busi
ness through absence of sings.
A computer analysis of more
than 60,000 Texas Highway De

Also planned is a 1967 survey
of eating establishments and oth

Dr. Adkins said some work is
planned in reference to the trav

Co-investigators are H. G.
