THE BATTALION Page 8 College Station, Texas Thursday, September 29, 1966 Ken Wants Ag Offense To Have Ball Texas A&M’s Ken Lamkin is not so big, but he’s a giant in the Aggie defensive line. He plays middle guard for A&M. Saturday night he was al most a hero in the Aggies, losing battle with Tulane, 21-13. Lam kin was playing an alert but un noticed defensive game when he recovered a Tulane fumble on the A&M 36. The play could have been the turning point of the game as the Aggies marched towards the Tulane goal, but the drive bogged down. As it was Lamkin’s play re ceived little attention and just went down in the records as a fumble recovery. This kind of play is routine for Lamkin. He doesn’t expect any special praise for his heads-up defensive work He just does a little more tnan his best to get the football so the Aggie offense will have an other chance to score. Standing six feet and weighing 192 pounds, Lamkin is not as big as a lot of men he faces on the scrimmage line, but he feels his size may be more of an ad vantage than a handicap in his case. “I’d like to be bigger and stronger,” he said. “But I think quickness is the main thing in the type defense we play.” Aggie head coach Gene Stal lings made several position changes after A&M’s opening loss to Georgia Tech that showed signs of helping the Aggies to a better season. “Everybody has adjusted real quick,” Lamkin said. He feels the revamping will definitely improve the Aggies Even in A&M’s loss to Tulane the changes seemed to help. The Aggies racked up 319 yards on offense while completing 21 of 35 passes. On defense the Ma roon and White forced five Tu lane fumbles and recovered four. Lamkin came to A&M from Early, Tex., where he was an all district center. He has come a long way since then. He now owns two varsity football letters and is working on number three. Ken is sport minded in the classroom, too. He’s majoring in physical education. Last year Lamkin played de fensive tackle, but says the new Aggie defensive formation changed position name from tackle to middle guard without making any drastic difference in his duties. The Aggies have made plenty of switches and alterations since Stallings and his staff came to A&M. All these moves will pay off in the end, Lamkins feels. He’s sold on Stallings. “I think we’ve got the best staff in America,” Lamkin said. “You just can’t say enough about them.” Parachute Team Elects Officers Michael F. Linz was recently elected president of the A&M Parachute Team. Other officers elected for the coming year are David Burrus, vice president; Dick Tracy, secre tary; John Kunzman, treasurer; John Irving, training officer; Skip Heard, safety officer, and Fred May, quartermaster. la-de-da snooty affairs our specialty!
