Observers generally agreed
that Tom Wilson, the 1965 all-
Southwest Conference quarter- »
back for Texas Tech, would be
the departing senior most diffi
cult to replace.
After two games this season,
John Scovell, son of a former
Texas A&M player, has made
Techsans forget Wilson.
All Scovell has done in the two
games is lead Tech to a victory
over Kansas and a near-miss over
the Texas Longhorns. In the two
games, the Red Raider quarter
back completed 27 of 57 attempts
for 375 yards, second only to
Baylor’s Terry Southall in the
SWC, but in total offense Scovell
leads the league with 415 yards.
Scovell said before the season
started that there wasn’t “any
way in the world” he could fill
Wilson’s shoes. After the Kansas
victory and the fine performance
against Texas, Scovell said:
“I’m mighty happy with the
victory and with the overall per
formance of the team. Tom and
I are different type ball players,
but if I can do half the job Tom
did, then I will have quite a year
—not just for myself but for the
football team as well.”
The former Aggie’s son thinks
his greatest improvement this fall
was in his passing, and he gave
all the credit for his progress to
Wilson.
What does Scovell think of this
year’s Red Raiders ?
“We have a lot of experience
in our line, which is probably the
best in the conference. There’s
(Phil) Tucker and (Jerry) Turner,
both picked to be all-conference.
Then there’s Stanley (Edwards),
who was a good tackle as a sopho
more last year, and Ronnie Pack,
who is off to a good start. Don
King is the only rookie in the
line, but he can go.”
Of course, replacing Scovell
was not the only major replace
ment the Red Raiders had this
year. Donny Anderson is now
gone, but Scovell thinks that a
replacement has been found.
“Mike Leinert is a good runner
and has great potential,” he said.
“He will really hit you.”
TEXAS TECH INVADERS
John Scovell, son of Aggie-ex Field Scovell, will lead the
Texas Tech Red Raiders when they come into Kyle Field
Saturday to meet the Aggies. Scovell is the Southwest Con
ference’s total offense leader with 415 yards, 375 passing
and 40 rushing.
