Freshmen Awarded Gregory Grants
A student who didn’t earn
a high school diploma is one of
two freshmen awarded R. P.
Gregory scholarships to study
civil engineering at Texas A&M.
Tom H. Sathre of San Antonio
and John Rogers Cohagen of Ov
erton received the four-year
scholarships, announced Civil En
gineering Head Dr. Charles H.
Samson Jr.
“I congratulate Sathre and Co
hagen on receiving these awards,”
commented Gregory. “I know they
will do an excellent job at A&M.”
SATHRE, son of Mrs. Ruth
Sathre of San Antonio, completed
only three years at South San
Antonio High School. He attend
ed engineering science National
Science Foundation institutes at
A&M under Dr. J. George H.
Thompson and exhibited an
amazing grasp of mathematics.
He took college entrance board
tests and qualified to enroll as
a freshman this fall.
Sathre’s scholarship pays $500
a year. He did research work
for Dr. Roy W. Hann in environ
mental engineering last summer
and will continue to work for the
assistant professor, who is his
faculty advisor.
“Tom is a genius,” declared
South San teacher Kate Nichols.
“He talks and thinks math and
learned calculus on his own.”
COHAGEN, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Arnold Cohagen, 415 East
Madison, Overton, received a
Gregory scholarship of $300 a
year. He enrolled at A&M last
summer and studied in the NSF
program here in 1965. Cohagen’s
faculty advisor is Dr. Bob M.
Gallaway, for whom he will work
FRESHMEN RECEIVE GRANTS
R. P. Gregory scholarships have been presented to out
standing civil engineering freshmen Tom H. Sathre, left,
of San Antonio and John Cohagen of Overton. Gregory,
Houston contracting firm owner, made the presentations.
and has done research.
The scholarships are part of
several ways Gregory supports
A&M educational programs. The
Houston contractor is a member
of the civil engineering advisory
board and has been working with
the department in developing a
construction engineering and
management program.
GREGORY is a 1932 A&M
graduate and classmate of Presi
dent Earl Rudder.
“We are very pleased to have
these outstanding young men en
ter our civil engineering pro
gram,” Samson said. “We are
confident they will become a
credit both to our university and
the profession.”

You
don’t have to
be a genius
to work at
G.E.
Near genius is okay.
A near genius with drive, stamina
and imagination, that is.
And it doesn’t really matter what
subject you’re a near genius in.
General Electric is looking for top
scientists — and for top graduates in
economics, business, law, account
ing and the liberal arts.
Nobody who joins G.E. is going to
feel cramped. This is a worldwide
company, and it makes over 200,000
different products. So there’s plenty
of room to feel your strength — and
in some of today’s most challenging
fields: transit design, urban lighting,
jet propulsion, computers, elec
tronics, aerospace, you name it.
Challenges like these have raised
a new generation of idea men at
G.E. If you’re good enough to join
them, you’ll find responsibilities
come to you early. Your talents are
recognized, your work is rewarded
— in money and in opportunity.
This time next year, you could be
on your way. Talk to the man from
G.E. next time he visits your cam
pus. And don’t be surprised if he’s
young, too. At General Electric, the
young men are important men.
