THE BATTALION CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle
Battalion Policy Guidelines
Outlined For Coming Year
Last spring The Battalion printed a state
ment of editorial policy when the 1966-67
staff was appointed. As a new school year
begins we feel compelled to reaffirm our
policy guidelines for the year.
Our basic criteria will be simple — fair
ness, truthfulness and accuracy. We will
strive always to report the news as fairly
and impartially as we are able, without con
cession to any particular organization or stu
dent faction.
and integral part of any newspaper, and
reader’s comments are especially invited.
Since we will sometimes object and cri
ticize in our editorials, we expect some read
ers to likewise criticize our stands. Letters
critical of The Battalion are as welcome as
those of praise and will always find a place
on our editorial page.
Our endeavors will be aimed at the better
ment at the university as a whole and its
diverse elements, although we full well rea
lize often times many will strongly feel the
opposite is the case. But it is only through
questioning and at times opposing that we
can ever hope to achieve the purposes we
intend and the responsibility we bear.
Since we are the official newspaper of the
City of College Station as well as a univer
sity newspaper, we will include news of
interest to the city community in addition to
regular campus coverage.
In short, The Battalion editors and writ
ers will attempt to bring to its readers the
liveliest, most informative package we can
produce.
It’s not quite that easy, though.
Our editorial stands will be oriented to
ward what we believe is right at all times,
not what the administration or the students
want for us to say is right. Our stands will
not always be popular, but that’s part of the
game. We do not particularly care to be
endeared to all, but rather only to be read
by all. Only through the presentation and
appraisal of lively and controversial subjects
can we provoke thoughtful discussion that
in the end may cause our university to be a
better place for all concerned.
No newspaper, be it metropolitan daily or
country weekly, can hope to turn out an ac
ceptable product without the support and
help of its readers. The Battalion is no
exception.
Editorials will always reflect the beliefs
of the editor, but the editorial page itself
will provide an open forum for Battalion
columnists to freely express their opinions.
Opinions of the columnists will not necessar
ily coincide with the views of the editor but
will nevertheless be printed.
We ask that university administrators
and department heads cooperate with our
staff members when seeking information.
So often we are denied even the most routine
information by these people and told to go
elsewhere. This becomes frustrating and
time consuming and ultimately the news item
we are attempting to prepare never sees
print.

With the help of administrators, faculty,

After reading the article in
the September 8 Battalion con
cerning Aggie exes in the Col

more money than ever this year,
I was impelled to write this letter.
We received two or three letters
pleading for a donation to the Ag

several of my husband’s class
mates. Yes, my husband is still
in school, therefore the Ex statis
tics are not correct. We are be
ing counted as exes and we aren’t,
yet.
